It's convenience. Just take the set out the bag and plant in the soil. No seed compost, no pricking out, no re-potting, no hardening off, no space needed on the windowsills or greenhouse.

In the spring when so much else is going on using onion sets saves time and valuable greenhouse space.

The mildness is exactly why I grow them, great in salads and cheese and onion butties.
if you cut into one use what you need wrap the remaining piece in cling film put in fridge will keep for well over a week. I grow a dozen in a raised bed which get big six or seven pounds.
the rest (40) I grow in 12" pots which as above average about four pounds. not a bad return well over two hundred pounds of onions for a bit of FBB and care, everyone I give some to say they are a really nice onion. The drying after lifting is the key to keeping them, I lift while there is still some warmth in the sun usually October and hang in the greenhouse until the skins are really dry and papery The pips I got have been growing for a while now and are around 5" high.
      Regards Sandy

But you only get an onion from planting an onion? Would it not be easier just to buy an onion - or do they taste different/better?

We always grow onion sets which I plant into trays of compost to get them started (rooting and green shoots growing)so that when we put them out into the allotment ground the birds don’t pull them back out of the ground like they tend to do if we just put the sets straight into the soil plus often as the sets are making roots they tend to push themselves out of the soil.

The sets we buy usually have been heat treated which is supposed to kill off the flower embryo so that they don’t bolt but I find that often in very dry weather we do get some bolters so I try to make sure they get plenty of water in the hot weather which I find as well helps the bulb to swell to a good size:smile:

Bit like growing a potato from a potato,.... you get more than you plant.
And you have grown it yourself.

Not sure what you're getting at there. A set is obviously a tiny onion that grows into a much bigger onion. Same goes for potatoes, you plant a small potato and dig up 10 big ones at harvest time.

I never bothered with growing onions until the big kelsae challenge. Grown them two years now from seed. Never got an onion bigger than my left cheek when I was 12...... and I was darned scrawny :)

Love the taste. Have now started a schedule of using them... YUM :)

Ah. lack of knowledge then @JWK - I thought a set was basically just an onion; plant it, let it grow and harvest..... an onion. I didn't realise that there was a difference.

Still seems like a lot of hassle given that you can buy a massive sack of them for a couple of quid in the supermarket?

But look at all the exercise you miss by simply purchasing them :)

@Fat Controller you do need to remember your hour glass figure :)

Hour glass? Light bulb would be nearer the mark :heehee:

I wonder how they heat treat onion sets?

I must admit, I like my onions heat treated - - rolled in flour, dipped in batter and then heat treated in a bath of sunflower oil

Hmmm. Assuming that's in a ceiling fixture, not a table lamp...

This cold weather is so accomodating to post harvest time. Bigger eats, bigger clothing to cover the evidence :)

Sadly, I am not being assisted much by my body - the lack of signals to my muscles means that they do not produce as much warmth as they did, so I now struggle with the cold, and that coupled with the reduced activity means that I am not burning much energy; the third part of the equation is that the main side effect of the immuno-suppressant treatment means that (at times) I have an appetite that would see me eat a horse, so it is very hard to stick to a sensible diet.

The Onion diet would suit you then FC, raw, pickled, fried and roast - keeps me slim and warm (and the pungency is a very welcome deterrent to unwanted visitors) :heehee:
