          I note this quote from Northumbrian Water.

          Which begs the question, what were the design capabilities? It rained hard for maybe a couple of hours, and lighter for most of the day. Yes it is quite rare that we see that volume of rain in one go round here, but its not totally unheard of.

          In there defence though, when it rains, the water has to go somewhere. Its simple physics. Years ago most of it would simply soak into the ground, but now that much of the local farmland I remember from my childhood is now housing estates, well lets just say that tarmac and concrete don't soak up as much water as mud does.
