I do most of my serious thinking when I am awake in the night. Strangely. I have been sleeping exceptionally well these past couple of weeks ... but I am not complaining.

Many, many years ago I was PA to a CEO called Victor who told me he had a pen and notepad on his bedside table. It worked for him ... he went to England a poverished Czech and ended up a millionaire. He bought Sterling Moss's beautiful home in Tring .

 

Historical research certainly seems to indicate that the extent of the panic was hugely exaggerated by the media @shiney, there's actually a really good Wikipedia entry about the public reaction to the broadcast.

Random thoughts that come in the middle of the night ...

- Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard when he lives in the jungle without a razor?
- Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are flat?
- Why do banks charge a fee on 'insufficient funds' when they know there is not enough?
- Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?
- Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?

Think I’m going nut’s, was watching a police show on tv, about dog handler’s around the world. I found myself thinking how foreign dogs communicate with dogs from here in the U.K. because my two King Charles spaniel’s were glued to the tv and seemed to understand, told I’m losing it

 

A lot of the K9s in the States are trained in Germany and only understand German! I see this on one of the American cop programmes I watch where the handler is chasing around with the dog commanding in German!

 

I wonder why they do that, there must be a reason, perhaps they don’t want to share their commands with the criminals

 

They always tell you they are talking to the dogs in German as they came from there (German Shepherds ) but don't say why. Maybe the training is better. I shall go look that up now.

Here's a random musing for you all.

It's about when state of the art cutting edge technology meets vintage tech.

I went for an MRI scan today. As I lay on the bed thing, all robotic controlled, ready to go into the machine, one of the staff put some headphones on me and put a squeezy thing in my hand, which I was to squeeze if I panicked.

It fascinated me that the headphones and squeezy panic button thing were not electronic. In fact they were attached to plastic tubes. So the operator's method of communicating instructions to me amounted to literally talking through a pipe. I had in mind the old war films where messages were communicated between different parts of a ship by shouting through a tube.

I know why this was so. There can be no metal going into the scanner. But it did fascinate me that you've got this machine that costs hundreds of thousands of pounds, and uses a combination of super powerful superconducting electro magnets and delicate sensors and powerful electronics, and a talking tube.
