Forgive mentioning, expect you are well aware, but it looks like your balcony is on the first or second floor, have you checked as to the weight the structure can take, partic when all those large 50L pots are full of water ..?

    Hi again everyone,

too many double shifts all week so back at it now, sorry for the later reply! Thanks for the great suggestions once again MarleyFarley!! I'm gonna try and see local nurseries in case it matters where they are grown, and hopefully get a mixture of periwinkle, geraniums, clematis and honeysuckle! I think Heucherellas won't droop that low sadly, which is a shame as the colours and foliage are ideal to me. But still very happy if the above work, I'll hopefully get to a couple of local places tomorrow and set everything in motion and update! I'll deal with ground cover last, as it's gonna stress me out too much looking into all the options for there too, but the Hostas look fantastic!

Ricky101, it's kind of weird, under the balcony it's not a gap, it's a shop, so I imagine weightwise it must have enough support...Hope I'm not grossly mistaken!!!!

Do you think plastic pots are OK? I was advised by a clematis seller against them but already have gone and bought and put up 27!

Hi @Kroton glad to hear you are able to get back to things.. Looking forward to pics soon..

Clematis like their roots to be in moist and damp soil that is why the claypot was recommended, but their pots will perhaps be shaded by the balcony wall.?

If you want to green those walls up a bit, how about planting Parthenocissus Henryana. It is a nice smaller leafed variety that has silver veins, and is self clinging, happy in shade, and easy enough to keep in check. It would be happy in a large pot, and would make a good back drop for anything you plant in the baskets.

The pots will definitely be shaded by the balcony, and I'll keep a close eye too. I use canna terra soil which seems to retain a lot of moisture judging by my shrub/trees, so hopefully should be OK! The clematis will be here tomorrow, and I'm just about to order the periwinkle, and I've still got to decide on the final section. I like the look of dropmore scarlet honeysuckle so might chance it with that even though it's not evergreen. I also saw that mini greenhouses are about £300ish so I'm now considering a small section to store things in the winter too...this is all too addictive and evil:)

Thanks again for all your help!!
