Hi all. I'm looking to plant some rhubarb and just wondering what opinions are regarding varieties. At the moment I'm thinking maybe 3 plants. Timperley Early sounds good and I like the idea of having something available early on in the season. I'm thinking perhaps 2 of these and one of something else. Flavour is probably the most important attribute but perhaps there is something with bigger yields or later season.

Also is now a good time to plant? And I'm thinking about paying a little extra for for pot grown ones so I hopefully get a decent crop a bit quicker.

    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

I can't help you with this but I'm sure some of our members will be along soon.

Our rhubarb patch is 64 years old and still going strong but I have no idea what varieties they are.

think this topic came up somewhere before. so give it a search. as I recall my answer was, to get all types. from a foodie mind. sometime using all types in a sauce makes more character to the sauce than one type. when I make an apple pie, I use at least 3 types of apples mixed together. Just food for thought.

Thats about the same age as my rhubarb patch, and I've no idea of the variety either. At a guess, it would be "Victoria." It certainly has the characteristics of that one.

Perhaps things are different here, but "Timperly Early" is regarded as having poor taste and poor harvest. Theres a variety called "Marshalls Early Red" that is regarded here as being one of the best.
