It would take a rising of the sea and a lot of rain for me to get affected, GA, as I'm a good 100' above the River Weaver which is the nearest to me, and what water we get is absorbed by the 300' - 450' of sand underneath me or runs down hill away from my House.:snork:

You're right in everything you say Armandii. My mistake was to think you were talking about England in general. The Danes of course didn't settle in Mercia, as I well know.

It seems I've found a fellow historian in you. :) I've just finished reading about the origination of the Anglo-Saxons, a heavy but very interesting read. I read anything up to the Tudors, but not the Romans. I prefer medieval history and Scottish history is my passion!

I've always liked History, Sheal, maybe because the History Teacher I had was able to really show the effects of different events and how it affected us in present day. He was a Genius at that.
I've always been interested in Cheshire and Derbyshire History and there's a "few" books in my Library about both.:heehee: Having a old disused Roman Sand Quarry on the other side of the road in my Grove when I first bought the House brought the interest back I guess:snork:

I'm not much good at linking Joolz. If you punch in Battle at Danes Moor, that will bring up what you're after. :)

Don't forget, Joolz, that a lot of ancient names of places got changed over time by the Normans and those people given titles and land by the various Kings.
I can tell you that the Danes founded the town of Derby the name of which came from the word deor which I believe meant a deer settlement. There were settlements at Tamworth and Repton but the Anglo Saxons of under the command of Lady Aethelflaed invaded that area and took Derby and brought it into Mercia, and therein lies the problem as historically the Danes weren't able to hang on to territory for long. There was also a battle at Danesmoor between the Saxons and the Danes in 914. Not all places that have the name Dane in it have a historical link to the Danes though. Try looking into Repton as some action took place there.
