Rockery

I am renting an old house and yesterday whilst clearing away an overgrown bush discovered an odd structure that looks like a rockery. It's in a position with no sun. Will rock plants grow in shade? How do I plant something in between rocks?

 

Most if not all rock garden plants need sun for at least part of the day. there was a fashion some time ago for Ferneries, this is what you might have. There are lots of nice small ferns available.
Planting between rocks is a bit tricky, I use a very narrow trowel, but a wide bladed screwdriver is just as good for winkling out the soil. Most plants will need to have the old compost washed off so the roots can be squeezed between the rocks. As long as they are then well watered in, they will be ok.

 

Thanks for the reply. At the moment there are no plants - it's been smothered by a weed(?). I would be starting from scratch. I think it's probably Victorian. Maybe Ferneries were popular then? Actually there is a huge fern growing near it so I think you might be on the right track. Thanks!
