A large number of my pot sown runner beans have germinated and emerged upside down, i.e. root up, leaf down. Could anyone tell me the reason for this and whether or not it can be prevented.

Yeah i've seen that happen a lot. I dont really know why it happens, but it seems worse in pot grown seedlings. I find they usually sort themselves out, although there isn't always enough space for them to do it in a pot.
I started planting the seeds on their sides, but I still got the odd one or two that didn't know up from down.

    ??
I would just let them get on with it.
It's either the old seed skin hanging on,
or you have become plantsman of all time.

I was lazy with my runners this year, 95p per strip, bought 2 strips and there were 26 plants ...... Value for money I think.

Where did you buy them Nathan? Was it that place you must stop going to? ;)

Seriously though, when you can buy them at those prices, unless you're after a particular variety, its not really worth growing your own seed, is it?

Keith, if you sow them sidewise, with the white bit up, they will not go to Australia first..lol...........

Nathan....but it is, unless you are really late, do you know what type they are then? I just bought a packet last week, Polestar stringless, 50 seeds for £ 2.99 So put 8 beans in 4x 3" peatpots and make 4 poles, realised where I could grow some, whithout any animals finding them, got a spare run 20x15 ft..it's almost bare, as Bantams had it for winter, will grow some Broccoli, Leek, perpetual, Spinach and Runner beans.. for autumn and winter picking....and will save some beans for next year.

Congratulations ladybird, my father used to love nothing better than his own runner beans cooked and then served with butter. I share his taste <gg>

I've been picking some for only a week now. Usually I'm into my second or third week. I normally grow at least three varieties as each one prefers different weather conditions. The newer variety, Firestorm, stands up to hot weather better and are also self-fertile. They're a cross between a runner and a French and produce more tender beans with smoother skins but don't grow as long as the runners.

Mine are cropping now but covered in blackfly so had to wash the pods in soapy water. French beans have been really good and been picking about a month.

      What are yours like Jenny?

We had a lot of trouble with blackfly but I went round all of them rubbing (Yech!) them off the leaves and stalks. I then went round the garden transferring a lot of ladybirds to them. Very little problem now.
