I tend to agree David, dont know the full story in this partcular incident, but cant understand why anyone contenplating suicide has to make a spectical of it, in Woolworths of all places.
Is it planned that way, or does it just happen.

It'all probably turn out that he had asked to be locked up for his own safety and the safety of others, but it was decieded it was against the Human Rights act to do so.

    Who knows.

I agree, there are lots of victims in any one situation but that shouldn't stop us empathising with loss of life under any circumstances

They are all victims in the broadest sense and the survivors and anyone connected with such awful events deserve the most sympathy. Obviously the innocent deserve a lot more sympathy.

The point i am trying to make right now is that there is such a lack of control in todays society, no sense of the greater good in so many area's that make humans human, i honestly feel that 'back to basics' is a concept that even some within my own generation simply have no connection or understanding of.

    :(

Thought you might like to see what was written in our local newspaper today about the incident and the young man involved
The heartbroken family of 24 year-old Russel Ward, who killed himself in the Penzance branch of Woolworths by cutting his throat, have paid tribute to "a shy and quiet lad".Police inquiries are still being made into the tragic incident on Thursday and an inquest is expected to be opened tomorrow.

Russel's father, Colin, told The Cornishman: "The very public manner of his passing was out of character, leaving many questions in our hearts."

Russel was a former pupil at Alverton and Humphry Davy Schools who went on to study at Penwith College.

He was featured on the front page of The Cornishman in 1996 when he and a friend comforted the victim of a mugging and were praised by the police.

Russel was the second eldest in a family with three brothers and two sisters.

His father said: "His greatest treasure was Zelda, his pure white Siberian husky, who still sleeps at the end of his empty bed.

"He was always a shy lad and a bit of a worrier, which eventually manifested itself into mental illness and a spell in hospital this summer.

"Our son was a very loving, generous and gentle little soul, and will always be remembered as such by his friends and family. As a family we must remember him for his life, and not his passing.

"We will remember him for the dirty washing in the sink we always nagged him about, the spent towels on the bathroom floor and the inability to keep a tidy bedroom. He was just a normal lad. How sad he just could not feel that way."

Mr Ward said the family was deeply affected by the impact Russel's death would have on those who tried to help him. "They will always have our greatest respect and gratitude.

"Our thoughts also go out to anyone simply caught up in the events who may now be feeling affected. I know Russel would not have wanted this.

"In addition, I would also like to thank his friends and those in the mental health services who tried to help him throughout his illness." The family say they have been told CCTV footage inside the store does not show Russel threatening anyone with a knife, other than himself.

After the tragedy Woolworths in Penzance remained closed throughout the weekend. Staff had tried to reason with Russel before calling 999. Paramedics then attempted unsuccessfully to save him.

A company statement said: "Counselling and support will remain available to members of staff who witnessed last Thursday's event and returning to work remains voluntary. Members of staff from other stores have been drafted in."

Thank you, dg for the follow up. It is exceptionally sad in that no one will proabably ever know why.

I am sorry to hear of your brother. [IMG]

We had an incident here in Northern Portugal last week where a young mother strangled her 8 year old son (he also had a broken leg), then took an electric carving knife to her 12 year old daughter's throat and then to her own throat. She was discovered by her husband, the father of the children, a senior police officer, when a cousin phoned him saying there was no answer at the house or the telephone.

These are some of the mysteries of life one really doesn't care to dwell on.

Yes your right LOL , i really try not to dwell on these things , there are so many sad things happening in this world today but where innocent children are concerned it breaks my heart to think their young lives have been snatched from them
