Okay, I'm stretching it a little.

Anne read in one of her magazines about white vinegar being a good weedkiller..so iI had to give it a try as its a organic method.

Distilled white vinegar is slightly stronger than the normal malt (brown) vinegar and if you use this white vinegar in a spray bottle its a selective weedkiller.

I sprayed a small patch of mares tail (very pernicious weed) outside our back gate that grows through the tarmac three days okay. Today its all brown and scrunchy and definately on its way out. I gave it another spray and willl monitor it...see if it really does go for good.

    Clearly its dieing.

Any other organic weedkillers that work?

    Steve.
Thank Anne for finding this, and thanks to you for posting it.
If it works I shall go for it on my block drive..
In fact I might just try it tomorrow...

yes, please thank Anne from me too.
I have a 2L bottle of white vinegar that I bought about 2 years ago when I decided to pickle some chillies I had grown....the jar of pickled chillies still sits in the kitchen cupboard and the vinegar is under the sink gathering cobwebs.
So, thank you for giving it a new purpose!
one question....do you know how long before you can plant on the treated ground?

Remember the advice was for distilled white vinegar..its arround 15% stronger than normal.

Ali, it'll be down to ph I guess. There was also mention in the mini article of using a watered down version of this vinegar to help your azaelias (sp) grow.

I guess everyone knows you can kill dandelions with a dose of salt (what with that and the vinegar, fish 'n chips may never taste the same again!).

My Dad used to spinkle sugar on any toadstools which appeared in his lawn - although why he didn't just pick or brush them off, I've no idea - seemed to work though.

As soon as weeds appear in a paved driveway (or patio), pour boiling water over them.

Being a party pooper, just thought I would point out it is illegal to reccommend or use household chemicals/treatments as garden pesticides/herbicides.:gnthb::old::D

I've heard of the following mix but not tried it .......

    1 gallon of white vinegar
    [align=left]1 lb. table salt
8 drops of liquid dish soap.
    Instructions

Mix vinegar and salt in a pan on the stovetop. (If you use a stainless steel pan that is grungy looking, it will acquire a like-new bright finish).
Bring to a boil so that the salt dissolves into the vinegar. Turn off the stove.
    Stir in the dish soap.
Allow the mixture to cool enough so that it won’t burn you or melt your spray bottle. (You can let it cool completely if you aren’t in a hurry to go out and kill dandelions).
Pour the mixture into the bottle and spray on plants.
It is best to use a stream setting on your bottle and aim directly into the middle of the dandelion rosette so that you do not kill the surrounding grass.
Your dandelions will be dead in less than a day.

Yeah but no but yeah but ..... they'll have a job prosecuting my Dad for telling all and sundry to use a soap solution to kill aphids - he died (totally aphid free) in 2003!

Going serious here, Cajary said a couple of weeks ago in a thread on getting rid of weeds especially deep-rooted ones to use salt .... and I've taken up the challenge on my gravel and it's working ... :yho: .. that or they are just dying because it's time for them to die as we are getting very hot ..... :skp:

I'm not entirely sure its ilegal to use vinegar as a weedkiller, I'll go for it as legal until I have positive info its not legal. There are many sites out there recommending it and other uses of vinegar, many published books too. And one would think that "Women" magazine would not leave themselves open for litigation over a small tip either, thats where Anne read about it.

I'm ready to eat my words though and look forward to reading the information from an official source somewhere, I could not find this info when I looked earlier.
