I don't get the historical loathing thing. Sure, I know that technically England and Scotland used to fight, a lot. But I'm pretty sure I read in history that at that time the Scots were always fighting amongst themselves too, and that quite often the 'English' forces had as many Scots in their number as English. I could be wrong (my memory on the subject is vague), but I'm pretty sure that after reading lots of different accounts of the conflicts, I concluded that England could never have gained the upper hand over Scotland without Scottish support. And I'm pretty sure that the union that was ultimately formed was not formed out of victory in battle, but by mutual agreement.

Maybe I'll just never understand. It just seems people do some crazy things without even stopping for a moment to think about what they're doing.

There is historical loathing about how they have been treated by Westminster - the poverty that they have in places, and the presumption that the revenue from North Sea Oil was not fairly shared, and so on.

I don't think it purely stems from the the issues that existed when Hadrian built his garden wall :)

We are now being told that this will effect the remainder of the UK should Scotland vote yes.

Makes me think that maybe the rest of us should also have a say in this.

Ah, I see. So pretty much the same as the 'historical loathing' that existing in the north of England then. A region of England, most of it in fact, that doesn't get a fair deal when it comes to government expenditure.

Perhaps if Scotland votes Yes, perhaps Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland could forge a union of their own, and then declare independence from the UK:) Lets see how the Scots get on with theirs first though.

Sadly, very true. Also Cornwall, Devon, South Wales and so on.

No chance! Thatch didn't just close your coal mines, she abandoned them! So now huge swathes of our coal reserves are untouchable due to flooding. It was her ultimate kick in the man bits to the working man IMO.

Yeah it used to keep people warm and kept the power stations going, along with providing us with gas.
It also created a lot of employment that the unions finally wrecked in the early 80s

And the fact that the mines are all now flooded is of no consequence bearing in mind that we cant burn the stuff anymore anyway.
