Rose (Rosa 'Garden Sun') (aka MEIvaleir, Goeteborgs Rosarium, Michka, Valerie)

Since losing my beloved wife (2010) I have been searching for a rose by the name Valerie. My wife's name was Valerie Rose.

Finally I found the above rose in the database. I note that it came from the Meilland stables sadly over the years I have always had a good relationship wih many rose breeders across the world, however Meillands never reply to my communications. I know Wise Owl is also a staunch rosarian, who I have the greatest respect for.

Yes I am asking all my GC friends. Can you help me find a stockist for this rose. I redesigned and spent a small fortune of roses, mostly depicting many of Valerie's attributes. I would love to be able to go into the garden and say. Morning Val, and how are you today luv.

Good afternoon @Mike Allen my friend I sent an email to a friend I know at Style Roses and received this reply but haven't given up yet:smile::blue thumb:

            Hello Woo
Unfortunately there is not a rose grown in the UK called Valerie. You have probably found one in America/Australia, which is not offered to UK rose growers
            Kind Regards Eden Hilton

Hi @Mike Allen is it worth using Linkedin to get in contact with the breeder in Ireland of the most recent Valerie? I have found his entry so might be worth a try. Unfortunately his company doesn't have any web page as far as I can see.

Well it looks like 'Valerie' is avoiding me. Replies to my enquiries have all been....sorry can't help. Once again Meillands have not answered. I have to say, this is not the first time they have failed to reply.

I have considered having a rose named Valerie, but somehow this doesn't seem to meet my desire. Perhaps, if I were to breed my own rose, then who knows.

It's perhaps strange and certainly to me it's been very costly. Once deciding to do a make-over to the garden and dedicate it to the memory of Val. I carefully selected roses that, to me suggested to me, something of Val's attributes etc. I first placed an oder in the region of £200 with Harkness Roses. I knew the family via my friend SM Gault.MBE. VMH Naturally Sadly The father had passed away leaving two sons to carry on the business. Then one of the sons also died. It seems the nursery then went down the plug-hole.

Naturally I was delighted when my roses were delivered and was grateful at the discount given due to being a RNRS member. Then the unveilng. These were all bare root plants. Honestly, some were past their sell by date, withered up, skinny. Others had plenty of roots but only a single stem from the graft. As I always advise unhappy folk to do...complain. This I did and to this very day I have received no reply. So do these garden centres etc guarantees really mean anything.

                  Dear Woo

First of all, thank you for your interest in the Meilland Roses.

Meilland have never created a rose called VALERIE.

There is the climber Meivaleir which is reference as VALERIE, but it was never sold as such..

I hope this answers your question.

                  Best Regards
