@SandyNI As close as you can get - without any heat hurting the plants. LED's can almost be touching. :)

Printed manuals are becoming a thing of the past @SandyNI but are available on the internet to read through for any information you need.

@Sheal When I couldn't find the manual that was supposed to be with it, I searched online. There wasn't anything even closely resembling it.

True, user manuals are becoming a thing of the past. Most people now search for usage information of their appliance... surprise, not in Google, but Amazon! (I recently was in a training about the subject- most interesting  )

Anyways, I have my lights as close as possible to the plants, there's very little heat produced so it seems to be ok. Finding the optimal distance to maximise the light and the coverage over several plants is probably just trial and error.

I hope your seedlings are enjoying their new lights @SandyNI :) If things don't improve, just start again with new seeds.

My lights came with instructions to hang and plug in. No advice regarding placement/proximity to plants. But we have this forum and lots of great advice :)

There should be a manufacturers name and serial number on the lights. Perhaps you can track them down and send an email.

@Sheal ... did that and I got a lovely reply back which had some classic lines in such as
'Thank you for your kindness and sanity'. Basically, they said the instructions were in the Amazon listing (as others have said). Unfortunately, it does not tell me the one thing I needed to know which is height above the seedlings. I found a similar light which said no less than 70cm.... which contradicts everything I have read before and what folks are saying on here. So.... I'm going with the folks on here and my lights are just above the seedlings. After only 48 hours.... there is movement! I can see tiny little new leaves coming on all of them now.... woo hoo.

The reason some lights can't be close to seedlings is that they are very hot. I had some HPS (High pressure sodium) lights that were blistering hot when running and they would have fried my plants if they were too close.

Glad to hear your seedlings are now happy :)

It makes me angry when suppliers can't be bothered to find out the information you need. They've sold you the item, taken your money and then it's goodbye. Lori has helped you out which is good :) and if it wasn't for forums like GC we'd be left clueless, or in this case with dead plants.

Thank you all so much for your help. I'm learning so much from this forum. After only 4 days with light (set just above!) all 400 seedlings are looking heaps better and all are starting to get new leaves.... it's dead exciting..... I'm like a mother hen with her babies!
