    Hi All
One of the girls in work wants to plant a small orchard , apples.

Her dad has a farm and he is happy they are planted where the sheep are I told her the sheep would eat the trees , but she said her father said no they wont.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet on the same side as your friend's dad.

A friend planted a mixture of apple trees to start a similar orchard project, her goats devoured the lot, I vote they will.

They'll eat saplings, but they won't have anything off mature apples that they can't reach.

Orchards are full of Cider Rams around here.

At Heligan gardens they have an experimental orchard where they are actively letting things that damage trees get close, just so they can test out what happens. According to the info signs they put up, one of the most effective things was the sort of inverted cone shaped fence around each tree. The animals can get close to the base of the tree but when they rear up to reach the branches, because the upper fence rails are further out than the lower ones, the animals bang their heads, get spooked, and run away.

Cattle will eat the leaves of trees, groats eat anything, sheep will eat the young shoots of trees and hedges, in Zigs pic look at the height of the trees ground to first branch all the same height , i say cattle have been out there as well.

Some catttle if they are short of minerals will strip barck from trees, eat fence posts drink another cows pee

I voted yes because sheep will eat the new young shoots of trees but they will not eat a mature tree, but may if there is nowt to eat
