My plan for this year is to plan and build the stream on my small sloping garden, eventually it will connect into a pond but this will not be built for a few years yet, so my question is can initially run a stream without a pond? I'm thinking some kind of sunken resivoir.

Also what kind of equipment do I need to run a stream , size of pipes and pumps etc?

Anything else I need to consider?

    Many thanks

    Jamie

You'll need a reservoir at the bottom, that is where the pump will go. The size of the reservoir/pump/pipes depends on how high/long you have to pump up, and the water flow rate (depth/width of water). The big issue is you'll need it running continuously otherwise your stream will dry out. You could design in smaller ponds along the way down to trap water.

Just measured and its 14ft long with a foot and half drop, only want the steam and a foot wide just trickling down, then will plant ferns around the sides, would this work?

Sounds a good idea. I was thinking the same a few years ago but thought Id get the ride on mower stuck in it so just did a pond. Butyl liner ?
Get a lv pump and it will cost pennies to run maybe some snazy lv lighting too ?

On YouTube there is an episode where Geoff Hamilton makes a stream with a pond. I'm sure the principles would be the same for a stream/reservoir. Here's Part 3 (but the other parts should show up on the right hand menu: Garden project 3: Stream Garden - Making The Stream
