Your Cash, Loofah!!, as it's all added to your Bill, as is the environmental/green taxes that add a substantial cost to your energy bill.
So while you don't pay for it directly [i.e: up front], you do pay for it via the additional taxes. It's a case of "smoke and mirrors" when it comes to Energy Companies, and the Government, explaining what actual taxes are levied on bills. A lot of people don't realise that the cost of the "free" or discounted insulation of Houses is, in fact, being paid by domestic energy users [i.e: you and I] via the Green taxes on your energy bills.:dunno::snorky:

Well yesterday I tried to switch suppliers and I went to uswitch, they wanted to know how much I now pay for gas, and how much I pay for electric.
Also how many kw etc of each.

Do you think I can get that info from BG, no, that part of the site aint working, strange, or what?

Nup, EVERYONE's bill! Cripes, if I had to pay for you all I'd never afford my private island in the Seychelles.
But that deal is already done and people are paying for the meters whether you have one fitted or not so why not have one?

My biggest niggle about the 'smart' meters is that no-one thought to include water and to ensure that the meters would work cross-utility company. That's just stupid and incompetent. It means that sooner or later I'll need a replacement meter adding to the overall cost and sooner or later I'll end up with one stamped on the water too. Saying it out loud, maybe it's all in the governments plan...

There's one going next to mine, Ziggys, FC's, Woo's and Marley Farley's, fairly cheaply, loofaf, but it does have an active Volcano on it. :dunno::heehee:

For quite a few reasons as listed in some to the posts on the thread, loofah, but it is a personal decision to have a Smart Meter or not.:dunno::snorky:

                    @CanadianLori

I'm not sure how they do it nowadays but I work in the old fashioned way :old: :heehee:

I still enter depreciation etc. in the bottom section of my P&L account and it's transferred to the Balance Sheet.

I've just been looking at changing energy supplier - the cheapest rates available now include a discount for having a smart meter installed - no smart meter, no discount.

In time - if you don't have a smart meter - you will only be offered the higher priced tariffs - so the phrase 'arm up the back' seems to come to mind.

When we do eventually have a smart meter - the display will be left in the packaging.

With a smart meter, in the future, it will be possible to charge you more, for using gas and electricity at the "peak hours."

                              Exactly!

It seemed very obvious to me, but although I've not paid much interest in stuff about smart meters in the papers, you'd think the tabloids would have mentioned that it's likely to happen.

I'm always suspicious of new things that are supposed to improve our lives.

Going back in time, Moses fell for it.

God said to him, "I've got these commandments. They're nicely inscribed on polished marble tablets. I was wondering if you'd like some?"

Moses, being a little suspicious, replies, "How much are they?"

God replies, "Oh there's no charge, they're absolutely free, how many would you like?"

So Moses says, "I'll have ten!"
