Fair point, but by doing so is it likely that you will require £1.5 million of rescue services?? No- you may well cost your NHS £50-£100 a month, but that is a remarkably way short of the costs of launching a helicopter to recover you.

I suppose it depends at what point one decides to draw the line. Don’t get me wrong, this case of stupidity is quite outrageous, but I think it reflects rather well, the value we put on life.

Not quite sure it was a conscious decision ;) :heehee:
Yes, they chose to climb the mountain, but the getting lost bit was the part they didn't plan ;)

We need the Rescue services for accidents, lost people, etc, FC, and we'd be spending that money, which by the way is not enough because of cutbacks, anyway so the idiot climbers don't get that amount spent on them alone. A greater proportion of the Rescue Services such as the MDRT, Lifeboat, etc are unpaid volunteers who have to scrape and find ways to raise funds to carry on. We should be focusing on that being unfair and wrong rather than idiots. I agree that some sort of fine should be placed on such people but that's not the Rescue Services job and nor do they want anything to do with it. Also getting civil fines paid is lengthy and costly.:coffee:

But therein demonstrates a lack of foresight, planning and general common sense.

I suppose I was lucky enough to grow up in Dumfries & Galloway where I was free to explore and grow. However, I still maintain that wanton stupidity should not be rewarded by the public purse picking up the bill. Even if you grew up in central London, Birmingham, Manchester..... it does not take a lot of knowledge to work out that going up a huge mountain in the midst of winter is a bad idea.

I even have a degree of sympathy with those that have supported people who have pushed the barriers....... Sadly, reality bites, and each individual has to live with their choices (however funded)

I agree with both sides of the discussion :noidea:

Just as a point, do we know whether they will get a bill for the rescue? Ambulance services sometimes charge for being called out.

Two of the charities that I support are the RNLI (we're classified as Governors of the RNLI because of our donations but haven't the faintest idea what that means  :)) and Mountain Rescue (total proceeds of the sale of my books go to them).

If you have time, then a look at this website is instructive.
Darwin Awards. Chlorinating The Gene Pool.

It lists the stupid things that people have done to get themselves killed. The incidents have been verified as best as possible. There's a new set of awards every year.

They were called the Darwin Awards as the winners have removed themselves from the evolutionary chain.

@wiseowl Not stupid as long as you don't go over the top. Everything in moderation.

Try not to put sugar in your food and set yourself a limit on naughty things. Preferably don't buy biscuits as they tend to be one of the things that are too easy to have more of. Instead, it would be better to buy an occasional sticky bun (not iced) as a treat. That is something that you can buy just one of but you can't buy just one biscuit.

If you feel that you must eat some chocolate then get something like the 85% Moser Roth chocolate that Aldi sell. As with all chocolate it is high in sugar but if you limit yourself to half a section a day (or less frequently if possible) it won't be too much. The bars usually come in individually wrapped sections.

Try not to buy processed foods (pre-packaged foods tend to have quite bit of sugar added) and just make things yourself. Most tinned soups have sugar in them but soups are so easy to make.

Eat carbohydrates but not too much as they can turn to sugars if you're not doing too much exercise. You don't need to cut them out completely. Green veg is much better than root veg from the sugar point of view. So have plenty of green veg (or cauli) and less root veg.

I do all that - but just eat too much of it.

Then I think you can afford to be a bit naughty. :blue thumb:

Mrs Shiney is on a diabetic diet but still has some carbs every day. She has a little bread each day and some rice or potato but in small quantities.

We also eat out and she picks things that don't have a lot of carbs. Last time she had a small risotto starter and a chicken main with just a little crushed new potatoes and veg. We never have dessert when eating out although I'm not diabetic. It would be unfair for me to have something like that if she can't. She never orders chips with a meal but may pinch an occasional one of mine.

She even has a small piece of 85% chocolate as a treat.

She eats low fat but struggles not to have too much butter and cheese, although she tends to have a little each day.

Mrs Shiney has asked whether you have managed to bring your sugar levels down sufficiently. It's not unknown to reverse diabetes by dieting. If you have brought your levels down then you are entitled to eat other foods, within reason.
