spring onion

    many years ago i had a type of spring onion
    that grew a bunch on the top then bent over
    to set them self
    would like to find some

    I used to grow them aswell. We used to call them Egyptian tree onions. Dont know what Egypt has got to do with it though.
    I also grew an onion which formed large clumps, which you could dig up pull some of the bulbs off and replant a couple of bulbs. They were good as a substitute for spring onions.
    Thought they were Welsh onions but bought some a couple of years ago and found they wasn't quite the same. Any ideas.

    Yep, welsh bunching onions is correct..I think they also come in red as well now...they don't quiet get the bulbous bottom to the stem but after peeling the outer leaf off are a good substitute for spring onions

    Yeah, but these welsh onions I bought grew a lot bigger, could there be different strains?

    Its very likely there are different strains

    Hi, Welsh onion = Allium fistulosum, Tree onion = Allium cepa var. proliferum. Check out the RHS trial for cultivars of Welsh onion, & Japanese bunching onion (which was developed from the welsh) http://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/documents/Onion_salad2004.pdf

    OOOH Nathan, only just spotted this picture.
    Youv'e found me out...... No it aint me but I wound n't mind some of that "Wicked Ale" it looks good.
    Given up on the avitars, couldn't get it to work. At the moment all my pictures seem to have disappeared hope its nothing to do with me.
