I must confess, I am a regular user of Amazon Prime - - yesterday, I ordered two 10W LED PIR floodlights, three 13 amp plugs, and a roll of 3-core 10A (marketplace seller); I also had a failed delivery of wiper blades for the car, and glass cleaner which were due for delivery on Friday (the parcel tracker said they had been delivered, but they hadn't been) - a quick email to Amazon, and the items were sent again and I got a £5 credit by way of apology.

The floodlights, 13A plugs and the wiper blades arrived this evening, and I fully expect to see the glass cleaner tomorrow; the cable is coming from Ireland, so it will be later in the week. £79 a year for next day delivery, and I get unlimited music and video streaming online.

By the time you tot up a few charges for 1st class delivery, you will easily reach the £79 cost of Prime

I don't need anything urgently enough to want to pay £79 per year! I tend to equate everything with how many meals out I can get .

Come to think of it - I don't order anything from Amazon anyway :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Amazon is very useful and I do use it occasionally having items delivered is a little anti social ,when I can get out I just love meeting people and browsing in the shops having a coffee, if I used Amazon all the time I would hardly see anyone, just Woos personal opinion of course;)

We use Amazon for a few things, we're in the middle of nowhere so we don't see many people anyway and most of the shops are mile.....s away or closed down so it will cost more for us to go and get it than to have it sent to us :):santa sleigh:

I too like real shops, but I avoid them like the plague at peak times.

Also, online shopping gives so much more choice, convenience, and value for money.

Both have their pros and cons.

We didn't use Amazon all that much, and like you thought the £79 was a bit steep for something we wouldn't use. Then, a couple of years ago, we got fed up of paying Virgin Media an absolute arm and a leg for movie channels that we barely watched, and sports channels that we didn't watch at all, just because it was part of their 'bundle' - - so, we reduced our bundle significantly (lopped about £40 a month off), and decided LoveFilm was the way to go at £7.99 a month including DVD rentals right to our door. Soon after, we realised that if we paid the £79 as a one off payment each year, we still got all the LoveFilm stuff to stream and we would get free next day delivery on loads of stuff; in the majority of cases, Amazon are cheaper than a shop or even other online retailers, so that only adds to the reasons to use them.

Taking this week's purchases as an example:

2 x 10w LED PIR Floodlights - - £24.99 each, free delivery from Amazon; Argos £29.99 each, £3.95 delivery, so total saving £13.95

3-core 10-amp flex, 25m -- £8.56 from Amazon with free delivery, Screwfix £25.53 go and collect - - total saving £16.97 (plus diesel)

                1 x Bosch AR26U wiper blade - £10.69, free delivery; £11.84 + £2.95 delivery, WiperBlades.co.uk; saving £4.10 - Halfords £19!!!!

                You get my drift....

We got a 'smart' tv a while ago. It is not smart at all. In fact it is positively stupid. I still can't come to terms with the concept of a tv crashing and needing a hard reboot.

So once Christmas is out of the way, I intend to buy an Amazon fire stick, and use that for all the 'smart' functionality. Once I do that, seeing as Amazon also happens to be my preferred online retailer, it will make sense to get a Prime subscription too.

I think these days I get most of my stuff delivered . I suppose its folk like me who are the death knell of the high street. I rarely go to the town centre now to pay car parking charges and traipse around countless shops . I suppose my main shopping is Ebay with occasional Amazon purchases . Some items I really would not know where to find them on the high street.
Now the Amazon prime £79... we are currently trying Netflix. How do the two compare for content ?

We've got a smart TV as our TV that was 26 years old decided it wanted to retire. The TV works perfectly but we never use any of its functions as we're rarely in to watch it. We don't watch films, don't watch sport, don't watch soaps - oh dear, why have we got a TV? :heehee:

I watch news programmes and some comedy (particularly Dave). We can't stream anything on the computer as we have such a slow download rate.

After over 50 years of marriage there's very little that we need to buy so don't have much use for Amazon or ebay. Although I do buy our runnerbean seeds and print cartridges through ebay. Seeds work out less than 1p per seed and cartridges at some less than £1 each. No postage charge for either and I don't mind it taking three days by snail mail.

We have one Fire Stick, and intend on getting another for our daughter - cracking wee thing.

You can install software onto it (not too hard to do either) which will allow it to play any films you have stored on hard drive as long as the PC/device that the films are on is set up to be a media server

Just wondering where you all have your online purchases left when they are delivered.
I dont like leaving my front porch unlocked if I'm going to be out all day, and putting it in the wheelie bin dont seem right.
                              Any ideas?

My friendly Postie nearly always manage to stuff my e-mail parcels into here. If they're any bigger, and I'm not in, then he will leave them in the Gas/Electrical Meter
Cupboard at the front of the house. If it's big stuff it'll be coming by Courier and knowing it's coming makes me ensure I'm around to sign for it. I like the Couriers who let you track the parcel giving you the name of the Driver, the present location of the Van, how many drops the Driver has before he gets to you, and approximately when he'll arrive. Having said that, if all else fails then one of my 5 neighbours will always sign for a parcel.
