Tallest is only 1.15m/3' 9" high, they just don't want to grow this year.

Might be a badger, you could re-home it here Badger Adoption Centre

Lost two more plants over-night even though I'd staked them and tried to protect them a bit. I'm sure it's squirrels, never seen a badger in these parts.

Mine are getting on for 5ft tall now, one of the nibbled stalks wasn't quite nibbled all the way through and it is trying to recover:

:ideaIPB: That gives me an idea, could I graft one sunflower on top of another and double the height?

EDIT: Googling suggests this is possible

Got these three beauties growing in the veg plot at the moment, all self-seeded ones which popped up from seeds dropped by last year's sunflowers. They reappear every year now and I always leave a few for the bees and birds.

              DSC09500.JPG

The one in the foreground I transplanted to the corner of the plot when it was still just a few inches high, not really knowing if it would survive.

Just been outside and measured it - was pleasantly surprised to find it's an impressive 7ft 6ins (about 2·3m). :)

The various sunflowers which have popped up around the veg patch continue to put on a good show. This multi-headed monster is now my tallest - it's just started flowering and tops out at a fairly impressive 7ft 4ins (2·23m).
At a rough count it has over 30 flower heads forming, so it should look quite impressive when more of them open.
All with absolutely no input from me (apart from allowing last years sunflowers to seed at will) :)

This one's doing fine too. As an added bonus, a self seeded rudbeckia has grown right alongside the sunflower, giving an extra splash of colour around the base. :)
