If it's of any relevance I have been harvesting some of my Red Duke of York which haven't flowered yet. The ones I've lifted have varied greatly in size for decent almost baking size to minute! Very nice flavour but the skins split badly. Possibly better to have peeled and mashed them? Not lifted them all yet but not sure I would grow this variety again. Certainly the Belle de Fonteney despite 1 plant having scab have been absolutely delicious, bigger yield than RD of Y and no skin splitting problems.

I leave em 2 weeks after the haulms have dropped for the skin to harden for storage.

Incidentally, if the plants get blight, leave the tiddies in the soil till needed, they'll keep better that way.

Tipped out the first of my pot grown spuds last night, Bonnie 2nd earlies. I'm been getting rather fed up having to water them nearly every day.

Amour, maincrop, got a touch of early blight so cut them down. Now the crops are being harvested we wont be so reliant on queuing up with the down and outs for end of day reductions in order to be able to afford to eat.

It's that time of year again when I open the cupboard up  DSCI0001 (3).JPG

Got a few new potatoes this year, bit on the small side though.

Have to say my 1st real year of growing spuds has been great after a rather rocky start. Despite overdoing the manure which I used to earth up I'm getting a great crop so far (lots of plants still to lift and getting usually enough furtling). The manure has kept the necessity to water at a bare minimum and only 1 plant so far has had any kind of problem (scab). When I was getting some spuds today 1 of them had poked it's nose through the almost foot high earthing up I'd done and so the top is green. I didn't realise until finding out on GC that green potatoes are really not good to eat...you live and learn:) so do I have to bin the whole Potato or just cut off the green bit. Hoping it's the latter as it's 1 of the few Belle de Fontenay I have left which so far have been my favourite of the varieties I'm growing.

The green bit is just the chlorophyll, once exposed to sunlight the solanine is produced throughout the tuber. I found this out after doing just that, cuttin the green bit off and eating the rest.

Had plenty of time to google it later as I was sat on the bog while the woruld fell out of me bottom

OMG:yikes::yikes::yikes::yikes: guess who cut the green bit off and ate the rest about 2 1/2 hours ago? How long before I am confined to the loo? must admit have a slight gripe in my stomach atm but that might have started after I read your post!

I've heard of the immaculate conception but come on:snorky:. Not had to get the sprinting spikes on yet but staying close to the smallest room just in case.

Why would you want to be close to the front porch at a time like this - surely you would be better to be close to the Gary Glitter?
