We use Whatsapp to make phone calls mobile to mobile/landline for free. It's a bit like Skype for mobile phones, so it's free when using WiFi. I guess there are other apps that would do the same. The receiver doesn't have to have Whatsapp.

    When the phone rings at home this is what I do;
    Me: Hello
Them: hello could I speak to Mrs Lawrence?
Me: may I ask who's calling please?
    Them: Mrs Bloggs Fromi PPI
Me: I'm really sorry Mrs Lawrence is at work until 9.30 tonight can you call back then?
    Phone goes dead!

If I have spare time I string them along but keep asking them to explain to me because I dont understand....eventually they put the phone down!

I try not to be rude but sometimes you just can't help it when you know they are just trying to rob you.
It's really annoying & very intrusive. Don't worry @Palustris im sure it's just a scam,, just don't give them any info & certainly don't give them any bank details my friend. Xx

No problem for me anyway, I have not been able to actually answer any phone for over 20 years now. Took 8 years of Aversion Therapy for me to even stay in the house when the phone rang. Now I can even manage to stay in the same room. And make a phone call?.........shudder.
No Mobile phone signal here so one of those is not a lot of use.
And since I do not go out on my own and the only person I wish to speak to i my wife, even if I could use a phone, there would be no point as she would normally be next to me.
All she does with numbers which she does not recognise is pick up the phone and put it down again.

Kind of agree, we use our mobiles all the time, much cheaper. I've often wondered about cancelling the landline but often insurers and others require a landline number when applying. For example today I applied for 0% credit card from the Nationwide and they would only accept a landline number.

Then we would get no calls at all from our children or be able to call out, as there is no Mobile signal available here, except very occasionally upstairs with the phone hanging out of the window.

I don't use my landline unless its to call an 0845 number so unless i need to use it i keep it unplugged so i don't have to deal with these calls

the problem is they have no moved on to mobiles so now and then i get the ones about you have been involved in an accident recently and I'm like no i def haven't and yes i'm pretty sure i would have noticed.

i had one guy trying for PPI on my mobile who got angry with me because I have never taken out a loan and i don't have a mortgage and i pay my credit card off on time every month.

he spoke to me like i was the worst person in the whole world lol

every time i do get one of these calls on my mobile i block the number and if i have missed the call i always google the number if i don't recognise it and its a london area code. most of the time the sites say its a scam number so then it gets blocked

That's quite common with businesses of all sorts as they like to know that you have a fixed place of residence.

The only scammer that talk about PPI with me was someone with 0119246586, and it was last year. I just didn't say a single word when they called me. After maybe 15 minutes, they hung up the phone. :snork:
