July was mostly rain and strong winds. The potatoes have borne the brunt of this and look the worst for wear.

Sunday 11th October 2020 saw the commencement of The Great British Weigh-off, otherwise known as Judgement Day for the bucket competitions.

    But, first the September updates:

The update pictures were taken in early September.

And you thought I had forgotten, didn't you?

Judgement Day started off sunny with clouds that threatened rain but it never did - so, good omens and an auspice day.

Aware that we were still in the middle of a pandemic, attendance was staggered and we were mindful to socially distance.

With that fear allayed we got to work.

After much tipping out and hosing down, here are the results:

The Spud In A Bucket Competition

    To clarify:

No, you were not mistaken. Participant F did manage to grow almost 4kg of potatoes in a 14L bucket from a single seed potato.

That was an astonishing amount of potatoes and a new garden record. Participant F is easily worthy of being the new Spud King.

Yours truly won silver but, curiously, not at all dejected after being dethroned.

Taking a closer look at the winning entry.

      The Tri-carrot Challenge

Participants J and L DNQ. These two failed to meet the minimum length requirement of at least 7cm.

      Participants B and G DNF.

Growing the carrots was relatively easy. Those with a good crop which filled at least half of the bucket (see the September update) had a harvest similar to mine:

But, finding three similar show carrots was exceedingly difficult. All of the entries had flaws of some kind - it was just that the gold medal winner had fewer flaws than the others.

Yours truly won a bronze medal in this competition.

Lets take a closer look at the winning entry:

The Leeks in A Bucket Competition

There was only one eligible entry for this competition as everyone else DNQ - they did not meet the 20mm minimum diameter requirement.

          Guess who won gold,...

Yep, that's right, it was yours truly, Mister "The Leek God" Q.

          Here they were moments ago.

The chain would have been longer if you hadn't cut the leaves back.;)

The rules say that the green part can not exceed the length of the blanched part so the leaves had to be cut.
