It's a possible but I'm not sure it will fly with the Mrs! Could even be fun on some level... The builders, as far as I know, will keep on working but the roof isn't even constructed yet so it's whether they can complete that and get the house weathertight prior to the boot falling. Will be having a talk with them today

A large housing site nearby closed today. A fellow dog walker who's husband is manager of a builders merchants received a phone call from him to say he thought they'd be closing today.

So you've got the remainder of the roof structure to complete, stripping the felt and battens from the adjoining roof slope, new felt and battens to new and existing, brick/block infilling to eaves, strike scaffolding [1], install windows and doors (possibly fix before removal of scaffolding, but risk breakage of glazing units unless these are fixed from ladders, but it is a bungalow) as a do minimum to get a watertight shell. How many weeks for that in your contractor's programme?

What contract are you using - JCT Minor Works? You might want to have a conversation with your Architect about the implications of this delay and your (and your Contractor's options for the future depending how long works are delayed.

[1] Last time I checked, bungalows could be roofed/re-roofed without perimeter edge protection scaffolding unless they were a steep roof pitch.

              @Loofah
I've just watched Michael Gove on the TV and he has clarified a number of points. These include: building work can continue as long as the workers can keep to the social distancing guidelines. He was quite specific and mentioned it a few times. So it seems as though your work can go ahead as long as they can keep away from each other.

@Loofah Some builders merchants have started reclassifying as 'hardware stores', enabling them to stay open. I think that only tradespeople would be permitted to visit though I suppose the general public could order online for delivery.

Thanks Scrungee, there's a couple of weeks at least to get the roof finished but windows have been measured and can be fitted. Already had a chat with the builder - he's keen to carry on as long as he's allowed! If he's not permitted at any point then not much we can do but take the delay.

Which is a huge relief! Was keeping an eye on any clarifications etc and as this isn't a big site then we should be OK. Lots of large builds have had the site shut down.

They're builders - they always stay away from each other!

@Loofah it was on an interview on BBC 1 at 7.30 a.m. :blue thumb: You could probably get a replay of it.

I've heard that some sites have already been threatened with closure/shut down this morning because operatives were less than 2m apart.

@Loofah I have a DIY building project on the go currently. I decided to get as much material on site as possible to keep me going. I use Manyas at Slyfield Green you probably have heard of them. Anyway they said that supplies like sand and cement are drying up as the bigger companies are closing down. The driver was feeling very down as it will cripple their business. Apparently many builders are still working but for how long?

I got a delivery of sand and cement this morning but they said they won't get any more in after they empty their yard:

Well we're beyond the need for sand, bricks, mortar etc but do need timber and tiles... Oh, actually will need screed for the kitchen floor. Just have to wait and see! Builder is pretty switched on thankfully so anything he reasonable expects to need he has a source for.

                      ...
Just got off the phone with Trev (builder!) and he has plenty of people on site working hard (apparently), they're just working out priorities and supply chain. Lots of merchants are now closed, although travis perkins only for 24 hours while they seek clarification, but he reckons we should be OK. He has a small issue with timber supply but reckons there's a source and fingers are all crossed :)

If they can get it to the point where you can move in Andy that would be great! Fingers crossed here too. :fingers crossed: :)

All focus is 'to the rooof!'... have to select tiles in next couple of days which is tough as we can't travel to see them with the travel ban!

Have just sat and ordered a load of tile samples for bathroom flooring/wall and some engineered wood for the kitchen and maybe hallway. Couldn't believe that businesses will send out bulky items for free :)
