Runner beans were much later this year.....poor germination and slow to grow but now picking every day or two.
For me the white flowered varieties are best.....White Lady for past 2 years.:) Superb taste, stringless and prolific

My long runner beans have suffered from scorching temperatures and lack of rain, I'll be lucky to get one 24" long this year. @Linz How are your long runner beans doing?

Something tells me that the seed supplier didn't isolate and control pollination of their prize-winning marrow.

If it was from a giant Marrow, it's crossed with a Pumpkin. And orange marrows aren't accepted for entry into giant marrow competitions because they're not true marrows.

The flowers need to be tied up/bagged/covered before they open, then hand pollinated, then tied/bagged again.

                        Just as I feared.

I just hope that the pumpkin papa was of a tasty variety at the very least.

Could anyone who also purchased seeds from ebay seller classofseed please let me know how your plants turned out.

Our French beans (three varieties) have done very well and stand up to the heat much better than runners.

We've been picking runners for a few weeks now but they're suffering from the heat. I'm picking about 5lb per day instead of the normal 10lb per day and the quality is poor (taste is good). None of them are suitable for entering the shows but we can always hope they'll be OK by the time of the show in two weeks.

Runners don't like heat and originate from the mountain districts in Mexico and part of S. America. In hot weather they really should be in a shady place. Even in our normal climate they prefer part shade.

We went away for 9 days and picked all the beans and courgettes. That didn't seem to slow the courgettes down!

This is part of the crop when we returned. I didn't pick all of them as I'm allergic the courgette leaves and got too hot being wrapped up with a long sleeved jacket and leather gloves! I'm also allergic to tomato leaves :noidea:

I was feeling pretty smug growing Florence Fennel for the first time:
                            IMG_20180802_205857277_LL.jpg

... that is till I picked some and it's woody. Seems it has bolted without me realising. Feeling a bit stupid now that I didn't recognise the bolting signs. All consigned to the compost heap and lesson learned for next year: don't sow in April wait til June.

Oh bad luck @JWK. At least you had pretty foliage to look at:)This veg growing is quite a steep learning curve as I am finding out. My pathetic Cauliflowers (great the 1st 2 seasons I grew them....beginners whatsit) now look like colanders as the cabbage whites have had a field day. That's it I am definitely not going to grow the bu..ers again and stick to growing more borocolli instead, way easier and to me anyway, freezes better if by some miracle I get a glut of them.
