Thorny Purple Stem - Any ideas?

    Hi

    We've been cutting these down every year and have applied a few different killers to no effect. Can anyone help with identification and the correct control methods please?

    Looks like brambles, you sure you don't want them? If they are a cultivated variety they are very nice. If you want rid you'll need to dig the roots up, luckily they are very shallow rooted but they do put out loads of runners and there could be many roots.

      They are growing in a gap between a wall and our fence, so more of an annoyance really and will be very awkward to dig out.

      To be honest, I was worried that it was knotweed or something like that because of the speed it seems to grow at.

      If you can't get at the root then you could resort to weedkiller, you want something with "glyphosate" as the active ingredient, many sprays have this, most popular is called "Roundup" - for you rather than a spray (as it kills anything it comes into contact with) I'd suggest a wipe on product like this:

      It only works when the plant is in active growth, rub it onto the new green leaves when they appear. It will need a few applications over the year but it will kill it down to the roots.

        Just to add to what John has said. There is a bramble killer available that has good results apparently. :)
