I can't help you, Shiney, but the photos are fantastic :thumb: and they put the ones I found last week in Bedfordshire to shame. So I'll wait a while before I post mine :D

The first one is interesting, it reminds me of Star Anise and the red ones are gorgeous! I do recognize the last one though but you knew the name for it.

(Hope you both had a nice holiday up in The Lake District)

Shiney, the third one, I think, is Jew's Ear (Auricularia auricula-judae). Great pics.

Thanks Kedi and Treesurfer, I put another photo of the red ones in the September competition.

Kedi, we had a great time in the Lakes and the weather was good :thumb:. Don't wait to put your photos on here :). The star fungi stood about 4 or 5 inches tall on quite thin stems.

:) Shiney I think your red one could be... Hygrocybe coccinea or the Scarlet hood Scarlet waxcap.. I think...!! Your star shaped one could be... Coprinus micaceus Glistening Ink Cap.
Oh & I think the 4th one is a rather chewed & withered looking.. Paxillus involutus Brown Rollrim.. I think..!!

My best guesses are no 1 Copinus lagopides
no 2 beefsteak fungus Fistulina hepatica
no 3 chicken of the woods Laetiporus sulpherus
no 4 hedgehog fungus Hydnum repandum

:dh: Ooh Walnut, will all due respect.. I really hate to disagree with you, as you are a fountain of knowledge, but I don't think no 2 is beefsteak fungus Fistulina hepatica as it isn't thick enoungh or dark enough..!! Well not from the ones I have seen & also I haven't seen them in such a large group before... :dh: I apologise now if you think I am wrong & I hope I have not offended anyone....:(

    I didn't mean to start a disagreement :).

I looked up the coprinus (No 1) and although the text description of its habitat is right (living on charred wood) none of the images I was able to pull up showed the distinct star shaped head. All of them showed rough gills but the ones I saw all had very distinct star shapes.

With No 2, I don't know whether it makes a difference but they were inside a hollow in a dead tree trunk and sheltered from the elements. :)
