I always give bought plants in pots a soak in a bucket of water before planting. I’ve seen how some garden centre staff water and it reveals a strong training need .

Every spring I see signs in local garden centres wanting summer staff, they are not trained as such, if they were they would have to pay proper wages.
Most are just short term people helping out over summer, at least they do mostly try to water stuff, unlike supermarkets.

At one centre near me I’ve seen the same member of staff standing in one spot with a hose and turning to water the plants within the range of the hose’s pressure capability. I doubt that much reaches the compost in the pots but it keeps customers at bay . I rarely buy anything there.
