I've heard and read many times that top dressing is a routine aspect of lawn care, but the exact procedure seems to be a bit elusive. I bet someone here knows, so I have a few questions:D

    1. When should we top dress the lawn?
    2. What with (sharp sand? grit? compost?)?
    3. Do we cut the grass first, if so how short?
    4. How do we stop the top dressing from starving the grass by blocking the light?
    5. What do we gain by doing this?

    Cheers:)
