Top varieties for fruit/veg

Agree with JWK, Parsnips don't like cold soil. I cheated the last 2 seasons and germinated mine in a heated propogator and then transplanted. We had snow in late April last year for god's sake so decided to hell with it I'm sowing mine in a cosy place!
They did fine being transplanted altho I went by the end of planting them out! Some roots did fork (think it was being transplanted rather than stones being responsible) but intend to repeat the process again this season. We have already eaten about 1/2 of what I grew last year and today lifted some to have with roast Lamb tonight. They certainly are worth the effort and happy to stay in situ through the winter. I have had varying success with old (past sell by) seed. I sowed 2 lots of elderly seed last year. 1 lot not a dicky bird the other was fine. If you have old stock you can always give it a go and see if anything materialises but preferably fresh seed is best.

 

Thanks @silu and @JWK I missed that thread last year. Going to have a read now I'm going to save up my bottles and try it out, I will probably start a few indoors too. I have all fresh seed too. Properly going for it this year and got plans to make a raised bed on one side of the garden, also just phoned the council to get on the allotments list!

 

Crimson crush and montello were recommended on the gardening prog on radio Wales the other day, I thought I'd give them a whirl this year along with sun gold and yellow pear. I do love the big Cherokee purple but I don't get a wonderful yield.

 

crimson crush and sun gold have been mentioned by a friend I made on FB he's sent me a few types of seed but I'm not sure what though, turning up tomorrow will let you know what I get
