Hello all. I sowed my rainbow carrots far too thickly and need to thin them out but wondered what to do with the thinnings? Can I replant them? Seems a waste to just throw them away.

As a rule, it isn't advisable to transplant any root veg. However, providing the soil is moist, and you retain the roots undamaged, firm the soil around them, it can be successful.

Public enemy No1 in the case of carrots, is of course 'carrot fly'.

I think carrots will probably end up deformed if you transplant them, especially as they will be thinnigs that have been pulled out bare rooted.

If you can lift the entire carrot, with tap root ,intact then you may succeed. If you have a coarse, sandy soil, then form a deep* hole with a pencil type dibber, suspend the carrot seedling in the hole while watering to fill the hole. Do not compress.
*just deeper than the length of the carrot.
Anything over 50% success is a result !
And resow an extra row thinly
