I'm just gloating over my 6 new packs of giant lily bulbs - or "Tower" lilies as described on the packet, by Prinz plants. I guess "Goliath" is probably a copyrighted term so they've all got to think of synonyms.

The dilemma is, should I plant them in pots, as I usually do, or will I get better results size-wise if I put them in the ground?

I am in the East Midlands - friends tell me they have always lost their lilies if planted in the ground, due to cold and winter wet.

What spacing and conditions do you give them?

Has anyone had them for three years yet to see what they can do when they mature fully?

I bought some tree lilies ,Planted them directly in the ground and in three years they grew to 6 foot, Fantastic I planted them in a group they need a strong stake. Dug a deep hole about a foot, filled it with potting compost as it is light, sat them on top of that
(good drainage ) could really recommend them and the perfume is summat else they flowered for about a month. I then planted some more last year so now have quite a collection, Just watch for the dreaded lily beetle, They are just now popping up about 2 ins.

Assuming they are so called "Tree Lilies" (just a fancy name for Oriental Trumpets) then I think they will strengthen up over 2 - 3 years in the ground, and as such might not achieve that, to the same extent, in a pot? H W Hyde uses the nickname "Skyscrapers" for them quote "due to the fact that they tend to grow very tall when established". They won't tolerate water logged, but other that that are hardy and happy in any soil.

Plant on a handful of sand perhaps?
