Should I prune off the dead bits now or leave it for a while?

I would suggest you wait until the end of March/beginning of April.

Admittedly, it looks sad but since Hidcote pruned down just finger hight in September and all lavender had new grow in April, I would give it a try.
Hidcote experimented with that in 2022/2023 to see if the old rule is true that lavender doesn’t live longer than 3 to 4 years. They were right from what I saw in June 2023.

I’m done with lavender . They don’t like winter wet and even in my dry sandy soil they really only last a couple of years. Nepetas are much more reliable, easy to divide and equally popular with bees. I avoided them for many years thinking that my neighbour’s cat would show an interest but this hasn’t happened.
