I designed something similar to what you are talking about. It produces everything from quotes to workroom job sheets, ordering requirements etc. It was a headache to put together but I wanted to have it for my own business. I was offered money for it but I refused to sell or share it because I saw it as forcing me to provide ongoing support. A sysytem is only as good as the users inputting the data. And with many users, you would need to have a lot of areas restricted to keep the formulas safe from stupidity.

@CanadianLori - all my code is locked up to ensure that it doesn't get tampered with, and I distribute in an executable only format. In this instance, I may give access to one person (my friend) as she knows a reasonable amount and knows her limits - this will reduce my maintenance liability to some degree too). All other users are presented with simple fields they have to complete (or are completed for them based on other selections), and there are numerous procedures to stop them doing various things until they have fulfilled the given criteria.

          I'm back!

I tended to assume that what you were doing was for a simple management control for POS so that's why I said all other expenses would be coming out of the Gross Profit calculation. :blue thumb:

          So I guessed right :heehee:.

POS is, and should be, very simple and it looks as though you now have it correct. Whether you call it 'margin', 'mark up' or anything doesn't really matter. It's simply a tool to do a specific job and nothing to do with accounts and controls. :)

If it's POS to the trade then the VAT element should be shown separately and if it's to the public it can be included in the total. Any advertised price to the public should have the VAT included but the invoice detail can be either. So, simple POS is easier with both elements showing separately as it will suit both trade and retail.

Of course, from a POS point of view the invoice needn't show cost price (or its VAT) as that is only of direct interest to the vendor. The customer just needs the invoice to show the final price with the VAT element.

Off topic: it took me 46 minutes door to door on a clear road yesterday (Sunday) to Ickenham. So it may give you an idea of time to Open Day - if you can make it. :dbgrtmb:
