No, no losses due to weather conditions. However, I did lose three to either squirrels or foxes as there were footprints where they had been trampled upon.

I see that I should soak bean seeds overnight before planting out and am wondering if I should do that with peas too? Just bought the seeds today as we are now finally up to near frost free conditions :)

Thanks for that. I’ll probably sow in root trainers to start them off as I can’t afford to waste any space.

        Hiya Lori.
With broad beans, I’ve never soaked them and usually get good germination, maybe 90%? I’ve only ever grown peas once, didn’t soak them either, and from memory, probably around the same percentage. I have heard some folks will soak them in something like paraffin, to deter mice, not something I can vouch for. I started them in 3” pots, under cover, 3 to a pot. I suppose a lot depends on how you choose to start them off? Pests will be more of a problem if sown direct, I think. Hope this helps

Thank you @Freddy . Tomorrow is supposed to be the one sunny day we get in the next 5 days so I am thinking about getting the most out of the free water dropping and want to plant as many things as possible for a better chance at germination. :)

We soak beans for 24 hours but don't grow peas, so don't know. The regular variety of bean that we grow, Polestar, always give us 100% germination. The new ones, Firestorm, we're trialing for regular growing in our garden and for sale as well have given 96% germination. Firestorm were trialed by Which?, and ourselves, a couple of years ago and have now been given a Best Buy by them. The new trial we're doing for them (as yet unnamed) are getting a very slow start in comparison. I don't know if they will catch up later.

@misterQ you always are well ahead of us :blue thumb: but I guess you don't get the heavy frosts that we have been getting every day this last week.

It's good to see photos of things coming along around the country(and Canada), my time to plant out the beetroots and turnips in modules, several in each and sit back and watch.
I'm waiting for my runners and french beans to emerge and that's when I get impatient. Tomatoes and chillies planted outside weeks ago and doing well.

I pulled them earlier than normal as I needed the space so the bulbs were not as big as they could be. No matter because I like eating the green tops too.

                    Hi all!

I'm doing a few veg this year, all in raised beds - courgettes (planted out the day before yesterday, they weren't happy at first but are rallying); celery (still in pots on the windowsill); peppers (in pots in the conservie); tomatoes (also in the conservie); carrots (not yet planted).

Only minor issues so far, hoping it continues in that vein.

Got the first strawberry (note singular) yesterday, plenty more coming. I have no straw and don't want to risk going out to buy some so improvised with shredded paper, I will do this in the future now as I never need that much:

                        Strawberries are vegetables.

Now, repeat after me: strawberries are definitely vegetables.

It was done to let more light in for my crop of bottles. They will turn into cucumber plants once they shed their plastic husks. They will then be trained vertically upwards while the spinach leafs again.

Toms are out now - I debated whether it was too early or not and while I think officially it is, they were in desperate need of more space than the pots were providing, and I have twice as many as I need so still have backups. The two in the raised beds are looking mostly happy whilst the two in the pots are struggling, so I think I've made the right decision. Here's hoping it stays warm overnight.

Courgettes are still happy. Starting to harden off the peppers and celery today.
