OK, a little bit more digging reveals that it might have been an attempt to hack my emails. I have had a couple of password change requests on things that I do not have or use (Facebook being one), so I have changed all my passwords and shifted some things onto my Gmail account. I am fairly content that there is nothing security sensitive that they could glean from my email, but others may not be in the same position I am. Looking around on the VM help forums, there is quite a few instances of the same happening, and it appears that VM's email service is less than secure in that respect - - worse still, VM do not give two hoots.

I don't use Virgin for anything, having heard many complaints about there lack of customer relations in the past. But it looks like my bank will be taken over by them in the not too distant future.

      Hi,

Think that must be your cue to move ,move , move !

Sure you know you can have several email addresses with gmail and the like, the problem with that is the constant logging in with passwords, but if you use an email client like Thunderbird it does that for you. plus once its downloads your mails you can close it /work offline so your online presence is reduced.

Think like any big organisations these days ,there are good and bad stories, though have to say you hear more of the bad as most folk prefer to talk about the bad rather than the good.

Used several of their services and never had any real problem as long as you know how to play their game.
For banking you are well covered by the usual uk financial regulations, just keep good copies/records of everything.

"Unlike the TSB fiasco ,CYBG stressed that there would be no “big bang” move of Virgin Money customers to its platform on day one. The transfer will be phased over three years."

@Sheal , my experience with Virgin is the customer service is very good . You can get through to them immediately and they have always been helpful. This is for the mobile / broadband service , I have never used the financial side of Virgin .
Virgin started in the early 1970's with a few record shops

I use mainly Outlook and back up PST, automatically every day, on an external hard drive. That works fine - except :rolleyespink: when we downloaded everything from the external drive, after a hard drive crash, it downloaded all emails three times and the addresses in the address book nine times . When you have an address book with about 3,000 addresses you end up with roughly 27,000 addresses to work through to delete the ones you don't want. :phew: It's nearly a year and I'm still working on it.

02 service has been down all day. :hate-shocked:

I think the 02 episode points out how crazy we are to rely on technology, it will never be fool proof, always flaky and often not reliable IMO.
Too much reliance on this kind of dodgy stuff is dangerous.
To me the internet is mostly just something that is good, while it works, but tends to have problems at the drop of a hat.

I have Outlook and Thunderbird, and use them all the time - I do not use webmail at all in fact, so I am well covered in that respect. No matter what I had done in this case, I would have been in the same boat as the attack was at VM's end, and not locally to me.

Virgin Media is not owned by Richard Branson, and has not been for a number of years. It is owned by an American billionaire who runs a company called Liberty Global, and the Virgin name is merely 'rented' as it is a well known brand.

Your bank is also not going to be owned, or indeed have anything to do with Branson; Virgin Bank was bought over by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank Group, and they have in turn decided to turn all of the Clydesdale and Yorkshire banks into Virgin branded ones - but still it is only a brandname.

Generally, Virgin Media's customer service is about OK - they are on a par with other companies in the same arena; they just have a very odd approach to their email service as they see it as something discretionary rather than part of the package that people pay for.

                  Hi,

Re the O2 outage, think it really highlights to potential problems / chaos .

Think its even more reason that the UK fully follows other countries like OZ, NZ, US , CA and removing all the Huawei based devices from our data networks and similar, could be a armageddon if true.

Wonder how many Huawei devices CGHQ has in there ...? :what:

Thanks all, but what worries me is that I bank online. I opened an account with Clydesdale to avoid the 'big' names, it seems it's not to be.

But Huawei had nothing to do with the O2 outage - apparently that is firmly at the door of Ericsson?

Very hard to do when it comes to banking nowadays

I think that Clydesdale are taking over Virgin money , not vice versa . But they are going to use the Virgin brand name and phase out Clydesdale.
Also Clydesdale can issue its own banknotes, so that can solve any problem :snorky:

                          Hi,

What "worries" you about online banking and are you talking current accounts or saving accounts ?

Why do the big names seem to put you off ?

I know they do get the most adverse comment like the recent TSB /Nat West problems and would never use Santander myself as they always have customers horror stories coming out, but you do get some banks always having consistently good reports.

Probably the biggest problem with online banking is your own security methods, so many folk do not follow the most basic PC/ Mobile Phone safety rules, hope your security is good ?

A good forum to follow regarding banking /money etc is the MSE one.
