I think Wilburs "Gold Mine" was made into a movie as well, but it was big letdown compared to the book.

War and Peace
A summary

At last Robert has finished reading War and peace!
Im glad I finally had the time to complete the challenge!

In conclusion I have now confirmed to myself that all wars are total madness and only have one possible positive outcome, and that is to reduce the population on this planet for future generations.
A few words from Leo Tolstoy himself:

During that twenty year period an immense number of fields were left untilled, houses burned, trade changed its direction, millions of men migrated, were impoverished, or were enriched, and millions of christian men professing the law of love of their fellows slew one another.

Napoleon, after a killing spree in Africa, Italy, Austria and Prussia led his army of 600,000 men across Russia to capture Moscow.
This story tells of the misfortune of several Russian families during this period, the battles of 1812, and ends with almost the complete loss of Napoleons 600,000 strong army after fierce battles and a fast retreat on return to France.

So war is bad - watched the news recently? Will it ever end or is that why 'we' have to do it, to keep populations down and to see some prosper and others 'fail' and for that to live with them and future generations?

Anyway, did you actually enjoy the book or not? I haven't read what I would call a really good book for ages even though I read every day (thank goodness for the library).

What's next on your agenda?

cheers

Yes I did enjoy it. So much so I was seaching and watching clips of the movie on u tube!
It makes you think how Europe would look today without the conflicts of that time, and Im sure theres many a historian has writen about that very subject and why we do it?

My next book is ON THE BEACH by Nevil Shute. Only 500 plus pages so will be a breeze after W &P

I have now finished "On The Beach" and I reckon that was one scary read:(
Far to near the truth if there is ever a nuclear war on our planet.

Next I am tackling Neville Shute "A town Like Alice"

There's a theory that mankind produces its greatest works of art, literature, music and other artistic achievements at times of stress - ie, wartime. Just as an example, the buildings on the Athenian Acropolis were constructed just before and during the incredibly destructive Pelopennesian War that lasted for nearly 30 years.

Anyway! Still not bought W&P. But I will!

It`s at those rare times when we are made immediately and intensely aware of our mortality that we become "genuine" beings-or some philosopher once said. Nietsche or Kant or one of those anyway.

We become more human and less "the herd" apparently.

Your comment just about sums up my feelings after reading "On the beach"
I can honestly say I was made up for the charactors towards the end of the book and the enevitable outcome that was to befall them.

Perhaps along with your planned readings, a brief foray into the works of Nietsche could be worth your while then Robert.

You could provide a breakdown for me-then I might be able to understand it LOL.
