I contributed to a thread - Help on making a Willow arch... a while ago, and because of its vigour, have subsequently had to cut it back twice. It's now looking very fine. However, it has become a magnet for all the wasps in the district, including some interesting looking ,very large, ginger and yellow beasties. I tend to go round, rather than through it at the moment!
On closer examination, I've discovered it's also infested with large, black aphids. I can only assume that the wasps, and some flies, are attracted to the sticky goo that they excrete. The willow looks very healthy, apart from a bit of discolouration and seems none the worse for wear.

Has anyone else come across this before?

From what I can remember wasps eat aphids so are good. My willow had loads of aphids on the tender new growth but they all seem to have gone now. Try spraying them with a weak soap solution. Ants also are a nuisance when u have aphids as they feed off the sticky stuff and squirt something not nice at the aphids predator. I put up glue bands to stop them
