It's when ya start gettin mouldy that ya have ta start worrying!!

 

I can make my right thumb click loud enough to make people think I've broke it. I smashed it good and proper when I was 15. Didn't bother to seek medical assistance until a full year later, at which time I was told that the ligament had been mashed flat and had healed that way, and the bone had chipped and healed wrong. So basically my thumb sometimes physically jams and I have to grab it with my other hand, pull it out away from the joint and then push it in towards my palm and it goes CLUNK!!! and then its good for a while until it jams again

 

Now that did make me cringe clueless

 

So

Sounds a bit like the car's Gearbox - it is a bit long in the tooth though, which might explain it.
