I've had two serious attempts at losing weight by dieting.

The first time, I actually nearly died (following official nhs diet advice). Having recovered after emergency hospital treatment, I binned the diet for a couple of years.

Then recently I had another go. This time I did my research about nutritional requirements to make sure I didn't get a repeat of last time. Great. I didn't end up in hospital with wires and tubes all over me. All good. Except that I developed gastroenteritis followed by lingering 'side effects' that lasted weeks and weeks, almost certainly because I'd upset the balance of gut flora.

Has anyone had any success with weight loss diets, without horrible side effects or nearly dropping dead?

Gosh, what kind of diets did you try :yikes: :yikes:.

I have never tried any kind of calorie controlled diet, so cannot offer any advice on that. Diets like the Atkins and the Dukan are popular, I think, because they offer a quick fix to a long term solution, ie, immediate weight loss over a relatively short period. A permanent change of eating habits and lifestyle is the key (my opinion only ). Cutting back on alcohol, sweet stuff and eating real food, not junk food and exercising more. Swimming, cycling, walking all good.

I believe @clueless1 gets plenty of exercise, just cut the carbs, no sugar, bread, pasta, try to eat only vegetables that grow above ground, and eat nothing marked diet/lowfat, they all contain sugar.

        Just eat less.
Giving stuff up just makes it a miserable existence, why live forever if you are going to be miserable.

But then I've never been what you might call overweight.
Just slightly heavy when I was in my 40s.

Good evening @clueless1 my friend I have been on a low carb high fat diet for 5 months and have lost 10 kilos,I eat about 80g to 120g carbs a day,it works for me and a lot of other people but you must find the amount of carbs what suits you, everyone is different;):blue thumb:

That's alright @pete being blase about a diet I don't live a miserable existence quite the opposite in fact, and in fact have never felt fitter both mentally and physically ,I don't miss sugar, potatoes, starch, biscuits, all processed food ,rice, sweets,or chocolate,I can eat any meat ,all vegetables, any fish, fresh fruit, and hopefully will live long enough to see my grandchildren grow up I don't worry about the food I can't eat but look forward to all the lovely real food that I can:heehee:

          Yours Sincerely
Happy as a pig in :poo:

            Yes, just buy:

            1) A smaller plate
            2 A smaller bowl
            3) Less food

            +

            4) A dog who wants to walk 10 miles a day, and run another 3 miles.

If you don't believe me, ask @Zigs for a before and after confirmation.

I'm losing steadily by drinking the juice of a lemon in hot water first thing in the morning. Then, trying (but not always succeeding) to eat everything I did before in moderation, smaller quantities and only one or two glasses of white wine a day. Then some form of excercise whether stretching/cross trainer or buzzing up and down the slope all day.....
Nothing forbidden, no deprivation and it is giving the skin a chance to shrink along with the rest!:)
Oh and Clue....cut down on the ice cream! It's not known for being diet-friendly ;)

I use the "hard boiled egg" diet. You can google it for information. It is high protein, gets you metabolism moving, thuds in your stomach for a full feeling. Eat about 4 a day. Can have two for breakfast with a citrus something. then 30 mins before lunch time, and 30 mins before supper, helps to get a smaller plate also. Love hard boiled eggs, so I am good with this.

Have you tried pickled eggs Esther? There were a few Americans in a local pub here that were really disturbed by the cloudy scrumpy i'd ordered, (hard cider) They nearly fainted when I ordered 3 pickled eggs and put them in a packet of crisps too :snork:

But there you go, we are all different, I would sorely miss potatoes, sugar, biscuits, some processed food and a bit of chocolate now and then.
I'd never miss meat or fruit to be honest, if you dont really like something you wont miss it, if you do, you will.
I can see how sticking to a specific diet can help with certain health problems, but if you dont have health problems and are just overweight I tend to think just eating less would do the job.;)

Thanks all. But I know all the theory of diet and nutrition. I know all about calories in vs calories burned.

What I was really hoping for was some advice from anyone who's had success, and may have experienced unexpected side effects but found a way round it.
