It's just a wave, really - they wouldn't have a clue she was doing BSL.

I see that as the main point, and you should not go through with it until the disease/condition become intolerable.

It certainly is short and sweet, but as with most of BSL, there's a lot in the facial expression as well .

That recovery can take a lot more than 6 months with the greatest respect. You, of course, wouldn't necessarily be around for any fall out... but for those left behind?

I get it - it is a really difficult one... we don't think twice about putting an animal out of it's misery when there is no hope of recovery and I do get that argument. No animal is going to be coerced into doing it so that someone can inherit their house though.

Exactly, but close to it. Really does depend on the diagnosis, and the age of the person. Example kidney failure in an elderly person, the urine will be very dark and sparce. Lab work can tell you what is shutting down. Was there prior treatment done to extend the life, how did that go? Those questions/answers are found. I have sat with a few in hospitals holding their hand as they leave this world. Some linger on, and telling them that all will be good helps them move on.
On the flip side, have had hospice nurses assigned and the person perks up, lasts a few months longer than expected. I would not generalize.

I think the whole point is that a doctor or two, has to say that the specific illness you have is terminal, so disabled, seriously ill with likely life changing problems are not where it would be allowed.
Maybe I look at things differently but I think people should have a choice.

I've only had my close relatives to go by, but they all knew their time was up.

It is the mission-creep that worries me most - putting that sort of power into the hands of the government or an agency thereof (as the NHS is) may seem absolutely fine now... but in ten or more years when the legislation is tweaked? How long until it moves to "well, we can't afford to treat you, so you can have a life in pain or sign here we'll see you off"?

I categorically DO NOT trust the government, I have very, very little trust in the NHS or even the likes of the police nowadays, hence my deep reluctance to allow them any more access, influence or power than they've already got.

@redstar Doctors can't necessarily even give anything other than a typical life expectancy. Still using MND as the example Stephen Hawking lived for 55 years from the time he was paralysed by the disease. There have been high profile sportsmen in the UK diagnosed in recent years and even their experiences have been very different. Some have retained a level of independence for several years, others only for a matter of months. The assisted dying bill proposed for the UK requires that the person needs to be able to take the medication by themselves, so identifying the rate of deterioration is vital.

Sorry mate, I find that really worrying, to me its about you having power, not the government or any holy joe saying to you its against god's will.
Keeping dying people alive when they have no hope is just awful if they dont agree.
                    People need a free choice.

They already have free choice if they want it - a few boxes of paracetamol... take the lot and wait. It might not work immediately, but it will finish them off.

That is a really moo poo way to go and you know it.

I've got a few packets of blood pressure pills and other stuff in storage, but why should you have to do that, its crazy.
