Great to read that there are plans to ban trail hunting. I hadn’t realised that they used an animal scent to create the trail, surely that’s just asking for trouble? For some reason I thought they used aniseed. No wonder they get sidetracked if they pass an animal scent, hardly accidental.

If people want to have an enjoyable ride in the countryside, absolutely no reason why they can’t have a pre agreed route mapped out, and organisers to lead the way on horseback. That way, there would be no issues with dogs and riders trespassing on other peoples property, and no hounds being put at risk of running onto roads and railway lines, or savaging wildlife or pets.

The hounds don’t actually have a very good quality of life, being kept in kennels, and having to be ‘disposed of’ when they reach a relatively young age but are deemed no longer capable. They can’t be retired and rehomed, because of the way they have been trained.
And about time that they were subject to the same rules as everyone else, leads and muzzles required for their own safety as well as others.

 

I always thought it was aniseed, but apparently not. Aniseed might be too obvious.

 

Surely the hounds should be able to track the person laying the trail, that's how search dogs work.
Can anyone work out why the pack of hounds has to be so large, surely its just for show, a couple of good dogs would surely be better for tracking a scent.

 

It’ll never happen. Like all the other things they “are going to do” but never do do. Like ending leasehold, building new hospitals, getting rid of the house of lords, blah blah blah.

 

There’s also Clean Boot Hunting where bloodhounds track human runners, followed by mounted riders. I could nominate some of those human runners .

I've never seen a trail be in layed, so if it's trail hunting why do the hounds come through our garden following a trail the only trail in our garden is a fox one, never seen a human on a horse/quad bike or even walking/running with a sent through our garden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or in the countryside around here

it is just sport.

 

No trail just something of the person they are looking for, a friend of mine often plays at being a body for training sessions. Meet up on Exmoor and the bodies get told how far away they are expected to go (typically for a time period) then hole up somewhere in a ditch, in a dip behind a wall, underneath a gorse bush. Any dog that finds them gets a dog treat and then they go again.
If after one weekend I don't hear from this person I'll know they are still holed up on Exmoor and weren't found.
