Perhaps it is also better to consider that whilst corporate greed isn't going to make everyone in the country rich, it almost certainly will provide jobs and some stability that is infinitely better than being ruled by a dictator and being literally ran over with vehicles if you dare to protest...
I agree it needs mentioning every so often. I quite often quote Martin Niemoller and there are many versions of the quote because he said it at many of the lectures he gave and the people he spoke to were of all political persuasions, disabilities and religions and he tailored it towards them. The version I usually quote is the one at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in the U.S. First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
I quite like the modern versions, which go something like: "First they came for the immigrants... ...and I spoke out because I've read the bleeding poem!"
Somewhat ironic that of late, a hell of a lot of political movement has been against the Jewish people and rather than call it out, folks have been out waving their flags in the street and shouting for global Intifada...
Must admit i dont get the Greenland thing, Trump stated that it was crawling with Russian and Chinese ships and he needs Greenland to stop it falling into their hands. What's to stop him asking Greenland if they could build military bases there, in much the same way they have done in Europe since WW2. He doesn't need to own it.
@pete The US have Thule Air Base now Pituffik Space Base in Northwest Greenland. Missile warning and space survelliance.
I thunk they already have bases, @pete . It is the mineral wealth they are after. With all this mining and exploitation of resources going on, isn't our crusade towards net zero, heat pumps, electric cars, etc, a tad pointless?
I was just pointing out that his excuse needs to be questioned. Out net zero crusade has always been pretty much pointless, bearing in mind what effect it will have.
It is positively suicidal. I've just read about the Lindsay oil terminal that whilst part of the site has been saved, the purchasing company are not going to have it operational, but rather convert it to an import terminal. Currently, we import a lot of fuel from the US among other places - - - so if Trump does go into Greenland, and the UK go against him, plus add on the fuel volatility that is going to follow with everything else going on (Venezuela, Iran etc), where exactly is that fuel going to come from? It's all well and good thinking about shifting to electric for transportation, but the grid simply doesn't have the capacity to cope with that and we can't scale it up rapidly enough - and that is before we get to the fact that we still need fuels for plastics, explosives and for defence vehicles (fighter jets and tanks don't run on AA batteries) We've basically hirpled ourselves in the name of net zero and left ourselves like sitting ducks.
We spend billions of pounds to trying find life on other planets and trillions of pounds killing the life on the only live-able planet we know. Make it make sense. A quote from Greenpeace.
Or, at a stretch, The Hitchhikers Guide To The Planet'. I wonder whether Trump may actually be a Vogon.
