A flavour I must have overlooked on the shelves! Or maybe these are so popular, they have sold out. I dread to think! Spaghetti bolognese perhaps! Or lasagna. Or maybe some seafood options! Clearly the days of a hot cross bun tasting exclusively of hot cross bun are behind us.
Someone has done some taste-testing comparisons. My research has been limited to Sainsbury's, Waitrose and M&S, and it seems I have barely scratched the surface of what's available. 16 Flavoured Hot Cross Buns Ranked- Easter 2025 - Liverpool Guild Student Media
The recipe is from the late 19th and early 20th century, that's when my great-grandfather had the bakery. I've got some of the notebooks where he'd written down the recipes they used.
Thank you @Michael Hewett for another recipe. I like it when people share one that has been tried by them or someone they know. Referencing a general recipe site like allrecipe.com or your bbc one really is of no help. There's lots of not so nice recipes out there and I'd like ones that come with good references. Thanks again. I'm going to print that recipe image and work out the proportions to make a smaller batch.
I see ASDA has started too - lemon and white chocolate, salted caramel and chocolate, cherry bakewell, triple chocolate hot cross buns. I am going to try lemon and white chocolate as it sounds a weird combination. And tonight it's just good old fashioned pancakes made from scratch. With sugar and lemon juice. And I have a few limes for a change.
I had some Apple Crumble Hot Cross Buns from the Co-op. They were nice, vaguely apple flavoured, but I'm not sure where the crumble was.
How can a cherry bakewell hot cross bun exist? These are two different things surely? All I can think is someone has come up with a very cheap recipe for making them, so they want to shift the maximum possible in the available window between Boxing Day and Good Friday, and the more variations, the higher the sales. Presumably some are curiosity purchases. I can't think anyone has ever said to themselves whilst eating a traditional hot cross bun "Well, if only this tasted of cherry bakewell my life would be complete"!
I hope they turn out ok @CanadianLori, and it isn't a waste of time and money, I don't know what they tasted like. Maybe it would be less work making some from a recipe in a modern book.
I can't decipher the unit for the water. Starts wit an M? Many thanks. I'll probably try them at the weekend and I'll post a pic. Probably in the what are we cooking type thread but I shall tag you.
@CanadianLori, I would have thought it would be pints but I'm not sure. I'm more concerned about the 8oz ginger!
