On the school milk thing, you have to ask how far we have progressed recently when one of the biggest things any minister comes out with regarding what the labour government has achieved is ......Breakfast clubs.
What have we come to when parents cant give their kids a breakfast, I was a kid in the 60s and never went without three meals a day.

But apart from the air (which would have been cleaner back then ;)), it did actually contain ingredients that were actual food.

If you offered me an early example of a Mr Whippy with a 70s incarnation of a Cadbury's (made in the UK, no E number subs for actual cocoa mass) chocolate flake, I'd take that over most of the UP muck masquerading as ice cream in today's SM freezers.

School milk was 1/3rd of a pint. I can remember the milk monitors who brought the crates up to our classrooms. In winter it would be frozen and in summer too warm. I hated milk anyway so it was a torture every day unless I could give it away.

However, for deprived kids in poor families it was an essential source of vitamins, proteins etc and mannutrition isn't just about being hungry, it's about having the wrong foods in the wrong quantities. If your parents are poor and/or can't cook you're more likely to be fed an inadequate diet and grow up with built-in health problems that cost the individual and the state a lot to fix..

It seems to me that most British governments in the last few decades have based their policies on quick fixes, short term policies and sound bites. What every country needs is politicians with a talent for insight and strategy in domestic, financial and foreign policy thinking and a willingness to break free from old patterns. The US is no longer a reliable, trustworthy or acceptable partner in trade or security. Time to make new alliances.

In Singapore we had our milk in those pyramid cartons and probably heat treated. But we had a choice of chocolate, strawberry or plain milk. And in the UK in the early 60's we could have it warmed on the Aga.

I was the kid in school who would drink your bottle of milk for you. And take your cod liver oil capsule as well. Made me the woman I am today.

No Aga in my primary schools - Huncoat and West Didsbury!

I see Qatar (gold 747 prezzie to Trump) is seriously upset with trumpy. He's managed to upset other Arab oil states too. Shame, and NATO's chief is refusing to let the allaince get involved. Good.

Meanwhile, the increasingly impressibe Mark Carney has managed to get Japan on board ofr an Arctic alliance and has done a deal with Greenland to help mine all those lovely minerals that trumpy was after.

Icing on the cake? the US Dept of Justtice has finally released the tapes of interviews with a woman who claimed abuse by trumpy when she was aged 13. She bit is appendage and was beaten for it.

Surely impeachment can't be far away now?

At our school we all drank the free milk and also small bottles of orange juice and malt that were also free. I wasn't keen on the milk but loved the malt. We all had to take our own teaspoon for the malt.

I remember something called Virol, Haliborange tablets, and codliver oil and malt.
Bottles of orange juice from a clinic just up the road I think it was free.

I'm a mine of useless information - and they got taken over in the 1960's by Glaxo and subsequently taken over by Merck in the 1970's. They both had research facilities near here under previous names as they merged with, or took over, other companies.

                    Boring! :heehee:

I bet the shop were leaving the milk standing in delivery cages unrefrigerated for far too long.
