I still believe they should have kept polytechnics and not turned them into what were considered to be 3rd class universities.

      That's our money.

If the economy was working correctly and people had the right work ethic you wouldn't have to pay companies to employ people, ok maybe a small incentive to take on an apprentice but I dont understand what is happening.

He didn't, although the MCC let him in.
Maggie had Denis with his business connections and golfing buddies, she also "had her Willy".

Interestingly about 15 years ago I was talking to a colleague who was telling me how difficult it was for his son to find a job as a musician and how hard up the lad was and I suggested he should put his name on the bank at the hospital for any cleaning, portering shifts that were available while he continued to look for work as a musician. Dad was not impressed "no son of his was going to do that kind of job, he was too well qualified for that (6 GCSEs at a reasonable level). Anyway he now works for a local company on Non Destructive Testing of turbines.

Any paid work, is honourable work, whether you're 'over qualified' or do not need any qualifications.
I've cleaned toilets, nursed dying patients, taught "remedial" (their terms, not mine) shifted furniture and balanced millions, so decide what is the most "worthy".

Ah, but, he was willing to go along with what the "club" wanted. And a chap who's keen on cricket must be a jolly good sort, surely! ;)

I lasted three weeks in college - for no other reason than a local employer was looking for someone and one of the tutors at college had seemingly been impressed with me, so put us in touch and the employer took me on instantly. Sadly, that same employer made me redundant a few months later, but I then went and worked in Barnardo's (they thought I was taking the pee when I first went in to volunteer, as 16 year old lads didn't do that sort of thing apparently...) and during my lunch breaks, I went door knocking, leaving my name etc with anyone I could.

A matter of weeks later another local family business took me on as a general hand in a TV/Video/Hi-Fi shop and I worked my way up with them over the years. My later careers couldn't be further away from where I started, but I've never been out of work more than a few weeks at a time.

I agree that it was part of the problem.

                    Also agree.

That doesn't quite give the correct picture. Although I'm not saying I agree with it, they are 'only' giving £10,000 per person up to a maximum of £40,000 per family even if there are more than four in the family.

The possible £3,000 is a payment to the employer to encourage them to take on the equivalent of an apprentice or trainee and help towards training them.

Back in the 80's employers were paid about £500 to take school leavers and youngsters for training on the YTS scheme and the usual one day a week college training was also paid by the government. It worked quite well after a couple of years of hiccups - which I had pointed out to the government dept might happen because they brought it in too quickly (I was dragged in to help comment on the setting up ideas ). It eventually died out.

Thirty years later they brought in the Work Programme which they then paid employers around £2,000 to take on 18-24 year olds. They also paid employers around £1,500 to take on apprentices. So, sort of, bringing the system back again.

I know modern apprenticeships are totally different to what I did, but I just think calling a 25yr old an apprentice is not a great idea.
                      A trainee maybe.
                      OK just names and titles.

I'm really only familiar with apprentices being young and just left school and usually in practical skilled types of job, the kinds we seem to need more of.

With an eye to the latest goings on in the middle east and the non-sequiturs coming from airforce one, I was reminded of this…
