Blame Blair for that change. He wanted 50% of people to go to University. To achieve that he would have renamed pre-school as Uni!

I read an article this morning that said around 10% of students starting Uni courses have no A levels or equivalent. And some don't have a GCSE pass. :noidea: Barking!

Some time back now but I can remember apprentice joiners expecting to take a gap year because that was what their university mates were doing.
Some even expected the company to keep their job open in case they wanted to come back.

Back in the early 60's, it was estimated that 4% of 18 year olds went on to Uni, now that figure is hoovering around the 38-40% mark. When you take into account 30 year olds and younger, then 50% attend Uni. In the past a Uni needed to have 4000 students to be classified as a Uni, that has been lowered to I think the 1200 mark which the coalition party brought in, probably not enough Uni's for the rise in students.

How many of these students are in debt and are likely to be saddled with it, no wonder there is an issue with the younger generation getting into the work place and mental health issues, there lead up the garden path.

My daughter attended Bishop Grosseteste university studying English Lit, it was only granted Uni status in 2012 as it had mainly been a teacher training college in the past.

Not Uni related, but when Russia invaded the Ukraine and we were witnessing fuel shortages at the pump, we heard it was all down to Brexit as the cause of the shortage in HGV drivers. There has always been a shortage in HGV drivers for general haulage, but not for tanker work. It's a niche market and you have to wait until someone retires or pop their clogs before there is a vacancy. The same applies to certain studies, your not guaranteed employment if it's a niche profession.

It is ludicrous to expect 50% of the population to be academically inclined and logical, to me, that there needs to be different offerings to suit different ways of learning and different interests. The current system has devalued academic degrees with all these meeja study type courses. Before then the polytechnics and technical colleges took the people who were better suited to practical studies in science, technology and business management and sdents received grants for both fees and living tho the latter was means tested.

I can't see the point of pushing people to study further if they can't even get a GCSE. They need better schooling and support when they leave to improve their 3 Rs where schools have failed them and help them interest employers. We watch BBC North West for the news and it seems there are now places doing just that in Burnley and elsewhere so there is hope.

I never went to grammar school but I think it was right, and still is for those that are that way inclined.
We need different levels of education for those that fit that particular type.

Why would you force a really academic person to lay bricks, likewise why push a very practical person to learn Latin.

The education system is rubbish IMO, we are all different.

I'm obviously way behind on modern University entrance requirements . I'd always assumed that an A level pass at least would be needed in the subject you wished to gain a degree in.
As @Obelix-Vendée says, some of the degree courses being offered now have degraded the whole university system and not worth the fees which are driving so many students into long term debt. I did attend grammar school and gained GCE's. My school teachers wanted me to stay for A levels and then attend university. I decided against it as I wanted to travel thru Europe and see what was happening in other countries. I did various jobs in both France, Switzerland and Italy - a migrant worker in today's terms I suppose. Conditions weren't always wonderful and no "state" help available. That was my choice tho and I don't regret it.

                      Hello all

I Worked in Education for going on 18 Years, as a Senior ICT Technician and if I knew then what I know now, I would never have gone into the Education Sector.

You think Children are a Pain, you should deal with Teachers :wallbanging:

Hopefully, no Members are Teachers :)

The ones I have dealt with have no idea how the Real World works, they go from Primary School to Secondary School to College to University and then back to School

Just one example of Poor Education, I used to visit other Local Schools to offer IT Support and at one School they had Analogue Clocks in all of the Classrooms.

The Children used to complain because they did not know how to read the Time, so, rather than the School Teaching them, they removed all of the Analogue Clocks :wallbanging:

Just think, in 20 Years, maybe even sooner, the Pupils of Today will be the ones running the Country :yikes:

                      Kevin
