Whaaattt?

That area had been known as Palestine for at least 1750 years @pete but as a geographical place, not a recognised state with government etc. Given that Jerusalem and its surroundings are key places in Jewish, Christian and Muslim history, it was populated by Jews, Arabs and Christians who managed to rub along pretty well.

Only once Israel was recognised as a Jewish homeland after the atrocities of WW2 did the real problems start with Arab states vowing to obliterate it.

 

I'm too young to remember but I remember my old dad not liking the Israelis, I think the UK had problems with them at some point.
And some kind of hostilities went on out there, they always come across as a strange bunch IMO.
Not met many, but that's probably for the best.
As for Jews, in general, cant say I give a fig one way or the other, Jews are in most countries and usually just get along with the populations of those countries.

Jews are surely a religion, Israelis are from a country.

 

Indeed, Israel as a country nowadays is rather interesting.

There were some stories about Soviet Union people moving into Israel en masse as they were of the religion, nothing to do with Soviet Union vs. The West presumably .

It's just so sad that when we emerged from the horrors of the wars, founded the United Nations and thought we have learnt the lessons and can act together as civilized humans, we are still seeing the violence sparking up everywhere.

I still do feel that my generation (born after the wars), has failed to make the world a better place to live. We've had the welfare, the means, the understanding of what happened in our parents' and granparents generations and yet ended up with this.

(My Dad, born 1939, tells me not to feel guilty for not doing my part for making things better. It is what it is. )

 

My dad voluntereered for the army as war broke out in 1939. He was 17. As he was a voluntter and not conscripted, he didn't get out in 1945 but, after the Italian campaign, found himself in Palestine which was placed under British administration after the defeat of the Ottoman empire in WW1 and the decision of the League of Nations in 1922.

During the elction campaign in 1945, the Labour party promised to allow unlimited Jewish emigration to Palestine but then reneged. As you can imagine the jews were not happy and anti British militancy increased, leading to 100,000 british troops being stationed there and being subject to all sorts of attack which is why your dad wouldn't have been happy @pete

@Selleri Russia has a long history or repression against Jews which is why so many ended up emigrating to western Europe, Britain and the USA around the turn of the 19th/20th century.

 

All I can say is that I never saw cops with "patrol" rifles at entertainment facilities until this week. I never saw temples being shot up until this last year or so.

Pro Palestine "protests" are turning my country into a battlefield. Every Canadian who doesn't subscribe to a certain belief no matter that we have no influence over these conflicts on foreign soil, is worried.

Imans here denounce these violent actions but it is only talk. There are zero counter demonstrations propelled by them. Silent one handed clapping comes to mind.

I feel terribly sorry for the younger Muslim generation as they will bear the silent prejudice their antecedents nurtured. There may be a "Jihadi Jack" image come to mind to every employment recruiter that could possibly bar them from working for anyone but a "countryman".

I do not understand why a group would promote distrust of themselves.

So stupid and so sad.
