I've got greyhound cabbage seedlings just through. They are a fast and nice pointy variety. The good thing with them is that once germinated indoors they are quite tolerant of cool conditions so I've moved them into the un heated greenhouse. They need all the light they can get so it is a tad on the early side regarding light. Same with leeks, they don't mind cool conditions but it must be max possible light and of course frost free.

I wouldn't be sowing leeks until May.
Always think of them as a winter veg for next winter.

I sow leeks late March , transplant in early July , dibbing in where the spuds have just vacated, and have been cropping since November.

Ah - fantastic. I want to grow some red cabbages: just didn't know when to be planting. I'll get going! Thanks very much.

              I love red cabbage.
I only grew tomatoes and chilli peppers last year and they did well since may try some other stuff this year after all of these recommendations

Me too. My mum had a great recipe with red cabbage baked in the oven with sultanas and balsamic: I recently cooked it for the first time in 30 years... went down a storm at home. So now to grow my own - though my history with brassicas is very poor.

Uh huh: competitive gardening eh? Sounds a bit like the atrocity of competitive fly fishing!:biggrin::biggrin:

                    OK - I'll give it a go...

We have had growing competitions on here in the past, no prizes just for fun. One year we grew walking stick cabbages, some got over 10 foot. Also know as Jersey Cabbages, you may have heard of them @JimmyB ?

@JWK Actually - it's the one brassica I have grown successfully! I had a few a couple of years back: a mate went to a wedding where weirdly every place had a little pack of seeds there.

So are we saying this is now a generic red cabbage competition for all comers on the site???? :):)
