It might be an idea to talk to the neighbour before using weedkiller on part of their plant.
They do shoot up very quickly.

I agree that it is bamboo and not Equisetum.

With Equisetum, the old traditional way of treating it with weedkiller was to first bash it with the back of a spade. You need to break up the surface of the plant otherwise the chemical just runs off without penetrating.

If its a neighbour then its the one on a different parallel street i have never met. I wonder if its rented. We have 10ft fences between properties and I have never seen them do any gardening
How can it be their plant if its not in my garden. Should I get legal advice before pulling it out.

The shoots in your garden are part of their plant so it is politic to talk to them before using a weedkiller that could affect their plant.
The easiest thing is to just pull them out as they appear and save your money.

I really wouldn't start sloshing weed killer around. Just keep cutting it down.

Think of it as an inspiring example of how tough Nature can be. :) When humans are long gone from the planet, this type of life will be busy busting up through concrete and other man-made obstacles, reclaiming the world. I like that idea.

Im not even sure why anyone would want bamboo there's no pandas locally. I spend enough time dealing with my own plants to worry about my neighbours

You see how smart some plants can be, making themselves indigestible to all but a niche species existing in small patches.
Gotta love that kind of forward planning.

And food source or not, it is busy supplying the planet with oxygen, which we willingly suck in every moment of our lives.

Control it, by all means, but gallons of weed killer seems a bit drastic.

hi2u_uk,Thank goodness it has started to rain!
Excuse me..... but I see a wooden fence a few inches away...burning is not your brightest idea.

IF you really must use weed killer then use it as directed.
Do not be tempted to make a stronger solution.
Sadly I fear that will not be the answer to stopping it permanently.

My phyllostacys nigra is fairly well behaved and I like it. Many people like bamboos and keep them under control.
                  Some bamboos shoots are edible.

People love bamboo because it creates a tall green screen very quickly. And it makes a lovely sound in the wind.
I don't have any myself, but I also suffer from encroaching bamboo from a neighbour. In fact I don't think they have it any more - they have removed it their side and installed decking. On my side it grows in an awkward space by the patio which is raised up, so I can't reach to the bottom of it. I can only cut the tops off level with the patio. Though if I ever manage to get anyone out to rebuild the patio, I'll ask them to deal with it at the same time.

Didn't someone post on here that had masses of lovely plants destroyed because the neighbour's barbecue set fire to the fence?

I personally don't use weedkillers and in this situation I believe it's pretty pointless anyway. As mentioned earlier bamboos send out runners once a year and then grow full sized culms in a couple of weeks. After this they are growing underground but shouldn't send up any new shoots. If you have pulled the growths up then you are done for this year. The only way weedkiller would do anything, was if you poured it on the neighbours plant and that would mean a solicitor was needed. It would be cheaper to just install a bamboo barrier on your side but I'd still try and talk to the neighbour first.

I tried pulling it out but didnt manage to pull it out completely even when gripping it with two hands. They all sort of snapped leaving about an inch from the ground. I have a no dig garden so i cannot dig it out.
